Legacy Funeral Homes is seeking a Crematory Operator / Cremationist to join our team in Anchorage / Wasilla. This is a hands-on, highly detailed role for someone who is dependable, organized, mechanically aware, and comfortable working in a process-driven environment. This role is responsible for carrying out the cremation process with accuracy, consistency, cleanliness, and respect.
The right person will be able to follow procedures closely, work well with equipment and technology, maintain clear documentation, and uphold high standards in both operations and environment. You will be receiving decedents in various states and conditions. What You'll Do
- Operate cremation equipment in accordance with company procedures, safety standards, and legal requirements.
- Verify identity, authorizations, permits, and required documentation before cremation takes place.
- Maintain strict chain of custody and accurate records throughout the entire cremation process.
- Process, label, package, and prepare cremated remains accurately and respectfully.
- Keep the crematory, equipment, and surrounding work areas clean, safe, organized, and professional at all times.
- Complete logs, case records, maintenance records, and system updates accurately and on time.
- Monitor equipment performance and report any maintenance or mechanical concerns promptly.
- Work closely with funeral home staff to ensure smooth workflow and accurate communication.
- Use internal software and computer systems for documentation, case tracking, and operations.
- Follow all safety procedures, protective equipment requirements, and operational standards.

Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Alaska State driver's license.
- MUST have a clean driving record.
- Reliable transportation.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and remain active throughout the workday.
- Ability to work around heat-producing equipment and in an active operational setting.
- Ability to follow written procedures, checklists, and documentation requirements.
Experience and Training
- Previous crematory, funeral home, mortuary, warehouse, plant, or equipment-operation experience is helpful, but not required.
- We are willing to train the right person.
- Additional training and certification will also be required for this role, and the funeral home will pay for that training.
Job Responsibilities:
- Maintain ethical standards and confidentiality.
- Cares for deceased in a respectful manner while performing all the tasks involved in the cremation process.
- Receives remains and ensures all documentation is complete.
- Completes all required documentation with respect to cremation process and equipment maintenance.
- Adheres to all professional, municipal, state and federal licensing authority regulations applicable to the cremation of human remains.
- Maintains a business professional appearance.
- Schedules cremations and operates crematory.
- Fills urns, keepsakes, jewelry.
- Responsible for checking cremation authorizations for accuracy.
- Return messages/calls in a timely manner.
- Responsible for keeping inventory of crematory & related supplies and notifies location manager when in need of additional supplies.
- Light janitorial duties to maintain a clean and clear workstation.
- Cooperates with first responder, medical examiner, hospital, or nursing home staff to accommodate their processes and procedures for removal of bodies.
- Verifies proper identification of deceased, and collection of any paperwork and personal effects
- For in-home removals, displays courteous and professional interactions with bereaved families, and transports decedent to the funeral homes or appropriate facility
- Vehicle upkeep includes, fueling, stocking personal protective equipment and removal supplies, regularly washing, vacuuming, and detailing vehicles
- Assists with casket preparation and transportation to appropriate facilities (i.e., funeral home, airport, or other location)
- Helps with preparation of remains including dressing, lifting, and casketing of deceased
- Prepares chapel for services including, cleaning chapel, the arrangement of chairs, caskets, urns, or other display items as directed.
- If hired, employee must be willing to remove piercings and/or cover tattoos while working.

- Possess general office skills, such as typing, filing, sending and receiving.
- Familiar with the basic operation of industrial equipment to include basic trouble-shooting skills.

- For an employee to succeed in this position they will need to be able to solicit information from bereaved individuals and families in a time of mourning while maintaining optimum levels of compassion and professionalism, multitask regularly, maintain records and service requests from multiple cases at once, work independently, do simple mathematic equations, adapt to changing schedules, and contribute to problem solving when needed.
Physical Requirements
- Able-bodied
- Proficient lifting 100lbs frequently, pushing or pulling up to 350 lbs occasionally.
- You may be exposed to traumatic scenes and unpleasant odors.
- Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time and withstand short periods of exposure to the elements.
Equipment/Tools
- This position requires the frequent use of, and familiarization with, equipment such as Crematory/Processor, Cots, Retorts, Computers, Facsimile/ Phone System.
