Crew Chief & Ops Assistant

Position Overview

Are you a natural leader who enjoys the energy of the field but is ready to take the next step into business operations? Unique Moving and Storage is seeking a high-caliber Crew Chief & Ops Assistant to serve as the backbone of our daily operations.

In this pivotal role, you aren’t just a mover—you are the "Quarterback" of the job site and a key partner to our management team. You will lead by example, driving our 26ft trucks and directing crews on-site, while simultaneously handling the logistical backend that keeps our company growing.

This is a hybrid leadership role designed for a professional who thrives on variety: one day you’ll be orchestrating a complex residential move, and the next you’ll be optimizing schedules and training new hires. High-Priority Requirements
Due to specific vehicle insurance and safety requirements, all candidates must meet the following:

  • Age: 30+ years old.
  • License: Valid CA Class C license with 6+ years of clean driving history.
  • Experience: Proven ability to safely operate 26ft box trucks.

Why the 30+ Age Requirement?

We know this is unusual! However, because you will be operating our 26ft box trucks, our commercial vehicle insurance requires drivers to be at least 30 years old with a minimum of 6 years of clean driving experience. This is a non-negotiable safety and insurance standard for this specific leadership role.

Key Responsibilities

Field Leadership & Execution (Crew Chief)

  • Lead & Execute: Direct residential and commercial moves from start to finish, personally leading the team while actively participating in the loading/unloading process to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Truck Command: Serve as the primary driver for 26ft box trucks, ensuring safe transit, expert navigation, and professional onsite positioning.
  • On-the-Job Training: Act as the lead mentor for new hires, teaching "The Unique Way" regarding packing techniques, safety protocols, and heavy-lifting mechanics.
  • Quality Control: Conduct final walkthroughs with customers to ensure 100% satisfaction, handle onsite paperwork, and resolve any immediate logistical hurdles or customer concerns.

Operational Support (Ops Assistant)

  • Logistics & Dispatch: Assist in daily scheduling and the strategic dispatching of crews to optimize travel time and fuel efficiency.
  • Fleet Oversight: Oversee the "Ready-to-Roll" status of our trucks, including performing regular inspections, managing equipment inventory, and coordinating maintenance.
  • Digital Management: Utilize mobile technology and tablets to manage electronic logs, submit detailed end-of-day reports, and update job statuses in real-time.
  • Safety & Compliance: Accurately document and report any incidents, equipment damage, or safety hazards, ensuring the company remains compliant with all CA driving and labor regulations.
  • Strategic Growth: Participate in weekly meetings with the ownership team to identify operational bottlenecks and suggest improvements for company growth.

Pay Structure

We offer a tiered pay scale that rewards your transition from "training" to "leadership."

  • Training Period (First 90 Days): $18.00 per hour. This period allows you to master our specific safety protocols and customer service standards.
  • Base Pay (Post-Training): $22.00 per hour. Once you clear probation and step into the Crew Chief role, your base rate increases.
  • The "Tip Factor": In the moving industry, performance directly correlates with tips. Our Crew Chiefs average $5–$10+ per hour in additional tips.
  • Total Earning Potential: With base pay and tips combined, most of our leaders earn between $27.00 and $32.00+ per hour.

Compensation Type Rate / Amount

Starting Pay (Training). $18.00 / hr

Full Base Pay. $22.00 / hr

Estimated Tips. $5.00 – $10.00 / hr

Sign-On Bonus. $250.00 (after 90 days)

Performance Bonuses. Monthly & Annual incentives based on crew efficiency

Hours & Scheduling

Moving is a dynamic industry, so your schedule will be depend on business but prioritized. As a Crew Chief, you are the first person we call when a job is booked.

  • Weekly Range: 15 to 40+ hours per week. Hours fluctuate based on seasonal demand (summer is our busiest peak) and job availability.
  • Daily Schedule: We do not work a standard "9-to-5." Some jobs start as early as 6:00 AM, while others may be late-afternoon move.
  • Flexibility: We send out the next day's schedule via text every afternoon. You must be available for weekends and holidays, as these are the most common times for residential transitions.
  • The "Ops Assistant" Hybrid: On days when you aren't leading a crew in the field, you may be scheduled for office/logistics hours to assist with fleet maintenance and dispatching.
