Job Summary

Under general supervision, conducts a variety of crime and statistical analysis in support of crime analysis activities; collect and analyzes data describing crime patterns, crime trends, and potential suspects; assists with administering crime analysis database and tracking systems; assists with the collection and processing of evidence; assists in identifying and locating suspects, witnesses and wanted subjects; submits pertinent case information to prosecutors and other agencies; and ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures.

Determines appropriate analytical methods and information-gathering processes that are relevant to the cases.

Collects, packages, and books evidence; researches and obtains required information and data for particular cases; and establishes
other law enforcement agencies that should be involved with cases.

Prepares and shows photo line-ups to identify potential suspects, researches local, State and federal databases.

Writes police reports to document findings, including supplemental reports, crime reports, and property reports.

Discusses findings and alternatives with other Sheriff’s Office personnel in preparing cases and evidence and provides referrals to other agencies.

Testifies in Court proceedings.

Completes evidence submission forms for laboratory testing; tracks evidence submission status; analyzes completed laboratory reports.

Create confidential law enforcement bulletins regarding crime trends, wanted persons and officer safety.

Assist in generating and preparing local, state and federally mandated Uniform Crime and Arrest Reports; assist in developing year-end statistical reports.

Responds to telephone calls and questions from outside agencies and the public related to non-sensitive crime information or analysis.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Assists with budget preparation; assists with tracking of grants and budgets.

Minimum Qualifications Required



Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities for this position would be:

Education and Experience:
Associates degree from a college or university in criminal justice, police science, or a closely related field; and,
Three years of varied analytical and technical experience involving the investigation of civilian crimes or similar types of cases; or,
Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid State Driver's License

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:


  • General investigation procedures; Proper chain of custody methods; evidence collection methods
  • Effective interviewing techniques; to assist with proffers and debriefs, in the presence of a certified officer.
  • Financial, statistical, and comparative analysis methods; case management practices;
  • Effective business communications and proper English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation;
  • Report presentation techniques.
Ability to:
  • Analyze crimes, including evidence, criminal histories, potential suspects, interpersonal relationships, financial data, and other factors; evaluate probable motives, behaviors, and alternative causes and reach sound conclusions based upon research and collaboration;
  • Collect, evaluate and interpret varied data, either in statistical, narrative, or interview form; prepare clear and concise reports, and other written materials; organize and maintain accurate records and files;
  • Coordinate multiple cases and meet critical deadlines; exercise sound judgment within established guidelines; communicate clearly, concisely and effectively, orally and in writing;
  • Use tact, discretion and sensitivity in dealing with sensitive situations;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with victims, suspects, media representatives, attorneys, Court officials, County personnel, citizen groups, and the public;
  • Operate computer hardware and utilize word processing, spreadsheet, and centralized law enforcement software applications programs and databases.
  • Work under deadlines with constant interruptions;
  • Interpret policies and procedures
  • Use math and mathematical reasoning; learn and apply new information or new skills.
