JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: Crisis Intervention/Victim Specialist

LOCATION: Red Cliff Protective Services Building

SALARY: $22-25/hour, 40 hours per week plus benefits

SUPERVISOR: Protective Services Division Administrator

THIS IS A REGULAR FULL-TIME NON-EXEMPT POSITION

JOB SUMMARY: The Crisis Intervention/Victim Specialist is responsible for providing crisis response, information, referrals, emotional support, and personal advocacy to people who are victims of crimes, trauma, violence. This position also serves as a liaison between victims and various agencies, including the Red Cliff Police Department, Red Cliff Tribal Court, Bayfield and Ashland County Sheriff’s Offices and Circuit Courts, their victim services and advocacy entities in the surrounding communities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provide trauma-informed crisis intervention via phone or in-person.

2. Respond to local hospitals, schools, law enforcement agencies, or secured crime scenes as requested.

3. Provide medical, law enforcement and judicial accompaniment as needed or requested.

4. Assist with safety planning & Lethality Risk assessments, as needed or requested.

5. Provide personal advocacy, and information regarding crime victim’s rights

6. Attend hearings, and other court proceedings that occur during the justice process

7. Communicate and collaborate with law enforcement, prosecuting attorney, hospital personnel, etc., while strictly maintaining client confidentiality standards.

8. Gather and document daily incidents reports and calls for service data.

9. Coordinate with other advocates and programs to ensure effective and comprehensive service delivery.

10. Make mandatory reports of child/elderly/disabled abuse to appropriate agencies as required by law.

11. Maintain accurate data entry & collection for program quality, records & reports; data systems, as assigned, manage client records

12. Engage in professional development/continuing education as needed to develop expertise in key elements of the role.

13. Collaborate with local programs and agencies that provide services to victims of crime.

14. Maintain the confidentiality of all client information and data in accordance with federal and state regulations.

15. Demonstrate tact, courtesy, and respect in all communication and interaction with clients, visitors, and staff; and with outside agencies.

16. Attend staff meetings and other meetings, in-services, and other events as directed by supervisor.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY: None

KNOWLEDGE:

1. Good communication skills, both written and oral.

2. Understanding of and sensitivity to the unique circumstances of underserved populations.

3. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the resources available to families.

4. Ability to document and track face to face contracts, phone calls and other correspondence.

5. Awareness of and sensitivity to Ojibwe culture and traditions.

6. Competency in crisis management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Associate’s degree in human services field OR two years’ experience in a human services field preferred

2. Prior experience as a victim advocate strongly preferred.

3. Demonstrated skill in writing, speaking, interpersonal communication, and teamwork.

4. Public speaking and training facilitation experience preferred.

5. Experience working within the Red Cliff community or Tribal communities is highly preferred.

6. Must have a valid driver’s license, vehicle and appropriate vehicle coverage and maintain driver’s eligibility as a condition of employment. Be eligible to be put on the tribe’s vehicle insurance policy.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Regular contact will be made with clients/victims, community members, Program Directors and staff, and consultant(s).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position primarily works in an office environment and requires frequent sitting, standing and walking. The role occasionally requires rapid movement and standing for extended periods during crisis response, court accompaniment, or training activities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: All Tribal Buildings are smoke free.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Staff may occasionally be required to travel locally and nationally in tribal or own vehicle to attend conferences or other related events.

Any behavior or attitude that tarnishes the name or image of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa will be subject to immediate disciplinary action up to and including termination.
