Position Overview
Mental Health Crisis Specialist – Glenn County, CA
Location: Willows, CA - (Hybrid - Work from Home with Field Response)
Position Type: Hourly, Non-Exempt
Reports to: Crisis Supervisor
About the Role
The Mental Health Crisis Specialist provides after-hours crisis response services throughout Glenn County. This role supports individuals of all ages experiencing behavioral health crises by delivering timely assessments, interventions, and care coordination in a variety of settings.
As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will conduct biopsychosocial assessments, provide crisis intervention and short-term support, and assist individuals and families with navigating resources and next steps in care. This role plays a critical part in ensuring safe transitions, reducing risk, and connecting individuals to appropriate levels of care.

Key Responsibilities
- Conduct biopsychosocial assessments and determine appropriate levels of care, including voluntary or involuntary hospitalization
- Provide crisis intervention services to children, adolescents, and adults
- Collaborate with emergency department staff, physicians, and care teams to support clinical decision-making
- Coordinate psychiatric placements and facilitate transitions of care
- Deliver psychoeducation, supportive counseling, and short-term therapeutic interventions
- Support discharge planning and linkage to community resources
- Advocate for patients and families to ensure appropriate care and services
- Respond to crisis situations in a timely manner, including required response times
- Consult with supervisors as needed regarding diagnosis and treatment planning
- Provide support and guidance to families during crisis situations
- Maintain compliance with mandated reporting requirements and applicable regulations
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to ensure continuity of care
Pay Scale (range dependent on program supported):
- On-Call Rate: $5.86 - $10.40/hr
- Roll Out (Travel) Rate: $62.40 - $71.71/hr
- Contacts (if applicable): $87.76/hr
- Meetings/Trainings Rate: $36.59 - $41.60
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required (educational exceptions may be considered)
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, or related field preferred
- Registered interns with the Board of Behavioral Sciences (or equivalent) encouraged to apply
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in crisis services or behavioral health preferred
- Experience in acute psychiatric or healthcare settings strongly preferred
- Knowledge of 5150 evaluations, level of care determinations, and discharge planning
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong clinical assessment and crisis intervention skills
- Knowledge of behavioral health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and high-risk behaviors
- Ability to assess suicidality and develop appropriate safety plans
- Understanding of trauma-informed and culturally responsive care
- Knowledge of mandated reporting laws (Tarasoff, abuse reporting, confidentiality)
- Familiarity with community resources and post-acute care options
- Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure, rapidly changing environments
- Proficiency with computers and electronic documentation systems
Requirements & Working Conditions
- Ability to work after-hours and on-call shifts
- Ability to communicate clearly in person, by phone, and in group settings
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Ability to travel between program sites and community locations
- Ability to operate standard office equipment and systems
