Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the general supervision of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, the Respiratory Therapist provides cardiopulmonary services to patients in accordance with accepted respiratory therapy practices and established Departmental and Hospital standards of care. Collaborates with the Director of Laboratory for technical supervision of the I-Stat machine

What you will do in this role:

  • Selects, assembles, and checks gas administration, metering and analyzing equipment for proper function, operation, and cleanliness, including correction of malfunctions.
  • Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve removal of bronchopulmonary secretions, and administers prescribed pharmacological agents.
  • Modifies treatment techniques based on patient response to IPPB, incentive breathing devices, aerosol therapy, oxygen therapy, chest physiotherapy, and mechanical ventilation.
  • Conducts routine rounds of all inpatients to assess respiratory status and reports all putinent patient information to the patient care team (nurses, supervisor, MD’s) for appropriate intervention as needed.
  • Utilizes specialized knowledge of respiratory principles in performing general duties.
  • Evaluates and monitors patient response to respiratory therapy.
  • Records therapy and results according to Department standards with communication of information to appropriate members of the health care team.
  • Bases decision-making on sound principles related to quality of care in the Department.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide cardiopulmonary services to patients served in relation to growth and development over the life span to identify their requirements relative to population-specific needs.
  • Utilizes appropriate principles in the provision of direct patient care services .
  • Utilizes appropriate body mechanics in the moving and lifting of patients and equipment.
  • Utilizes appropriate precautions related to infection control in relation to patients and equipment/ supplies.
  • Utilizes appropriate safety precautions in all diagnostic/therapeutic procedures to ensure patient safety/comfort.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, physicians, personnel, and other personnel in the hospital to fulfill position responsibilities.
  • Prioritizes activities of self and others based on demands for service with ability to perform staffing and coordination of duties when assigned as Shift Supervisor.
  • Maintains awareness of current developments and trends in the provision of patient care services in the Respiratory Therapy.
  • Maintains awareness of current hospital and departmental operational policies and procedures which impact on position responsibilities.
  • Facilitates the development of personnel in the Respiratory Therapy and other hospital departments through the provision of inservice programs related to respiratory therapy.
  • Alert to the detection of errors in own work with appropriate corrective actions initiated.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Licensure Maintains license by the Texas Department of Health as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
  • Education BCLS, ACLS and PALS
  • Experience Previous experience in provision of hospital respiratory care services preferred.
  • 2 Years of Acute Care Exp required
  • Special Qualifications Registered/certified or eligible for registration through the National Board of Respiratory Care.
