BASIC FUNCTION: To participate in the performance of unskilled or skilled tasks in the upkeep of assigned public buildings, grounds, and related facilities. Responsible for overall cleanliness, and to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or equivalent

Must be 18 years of age

Experience in general cleaning, chemical handling and customer service preferred, but not required.

Experience in school custodial department or related experience preferred, but not required.

Knowledge or the ability to be trained to meet the responsibilities of the job.
-
Knowledge of fire and life safety codes is useful, but not mandatory.

Knowledge of basic techniques of custodial maintenance preferred, but not mandatory.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
-
Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment, etc., in assigned buildings so that health standards are met.

Cleans rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and/or draperies using vacuum cleaners and/or shampooers.

Sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and/or polishes floors, using brooms, mops, and/or powered scrubbers.
-
Dusts and polishes furniture and equipment.
-
Washes windows, walls, ceilings, and woodwork, waxing and polishing as necessary.

Empties wastebaskets and transports other trash and waste to disposal areas.
-
Moves and arranges furniture as required.
-
Removes debris from driveways, garages, and bus loading areas.
-
Sorts clothing and other articles, loads washing machines, and folds dried items.
-
Replaces light bulbs.

Inspects boilers and takes water samples daily during operating season.
-
Sets up and takes down lunch tables.
-
Sets up and takes down chairs for special events.
-
Moves portable metal bleachers between football and baseball/softball fields.
-
Positions and removes portable stop sign at state highway/street intersection daily.
-
Raises and lowers American and Iowa flags at beginning and end of day.
-
Fills in for other shift custodial absences as required by administration.
-
Makes recommendations to improve service and ensure more efficient operation.
-
Examines building and reports the needs for repairs of failed equipment.
-
Requests repair work as discovered and reports needs immediately for maintenance.

Maintains grounds and performs seasonal grounds work (snow, lawn, etc.).

Performs such yard keeping chores such as grass cutting and tree trimming.

Keeps equipment and work area clean and neat.
-
Performs minor adjustments and repairs to mechanical equipment as needed.
-
Follows the chain of command as required.

Restocks disposable items and provides inventory usage and data.
-
Requests supplies and equipment to complete required cleaning.

Assists the public utilizing the facilities with directions within the building and in obtaining/setting up equipment.

Maintains good public relations with students, parents, faculty, and community.

Reports to work each day clean, neat, and in uniform.

Works in all types of weather conditions.

Must be able to get along with a wide variety of people.

Available to work some weekends.

Has regular attendance.

Reports to work when an emergency arises.

Manages one’s own time efficiently.

Attends annual safety training including bloodborne pathogen, asbestos, MSDS, confined space, etc.

Attends in-service training and school meetings as appropriate.
