he City of Coeur d'Alene is hiring for a full-time Custodian. The position has excellent benefits and pension retirement. Candidates will not be notified if they're receiving an interview until after the 12/5/2025 closing date.

The Custodian performs routine custodial work and cleaning tasks in City buildings. Tasks include vacuuming, mopping, cleaning restrooms, and cleaning windows, counters, and tables. The employee may also be assigned to perform other maintenance duties in City facilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Building Maintenance Worker. Some custodial experience is preferred. The principal duties of this class are performed in a public building environment and include use of powered cleaning equipment and exposure to chemical cleaning agents. Snow removal duties may include exposure to inclement weather conditions.

Examples of Duties

(illustrative only and may vary by assignment)

  • Performs routine custodial work including, but not limited to, vacuuming; mopping; cleaning restrooms; cleaning windows, counters, and tables; and snow removal;
  • Sweeps and mops floor, including public hallways and department offices, meeting rooms, and restrooms;
  • Vacuums carpeted floors;
  • Dusts and wipes off surfaces;
  • Strips and waxes floors and shampoos carpets on a regular maintenance schedule;
  • Cleans and sanitizes restroom areas, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, privacy dividers, walls and floor areas;
  • Maintains supply levels in restrooms, including toilet paper, paper towels, and soap;
  • Washes walls, windows, and surface areas;
  • Cleans glass walls and display case glass doors;
  • Cleans light fixtures and replaces bulbs, as needed;
  • Empties and cleans trash containers, including transporting bagged waste to outside trash receptacles;
  • Dust and cleans air vents;
  • Cleans and polishes mirrors, wood, and other special reflective and decorative surfaces;
  • Cleans spills, spot cleans carpets, and removes graffiti as needed
  • Cleans and maintains custodial equipment;
  • Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies;
  • Performs light, routine building maintenance;
  • Mixes cleaning solutions and agents, directions and all safety precautions;
  • Responds to management's, supervisor's, co-workers' and citizens' questions and comments in a courteous, thorough and timely manner;
  • Performs time management and scheduling functions, meets deadlines, and sets project priorities;
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of all matters;
  • Assists other department and City employees as needed or requested;
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Sets up and breaks down tables and chairs for public meetings;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED;
  • One (1) year of custodial experience preferred; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this classification. While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, climb and work on a ladder, use hands to manipulate and make adjustments to tools used in performing the essential functions of the classification, reach with hands and arms, and move through unfamiliar buildings. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 70 pounds and, infrequently, carry up to 70 pounds for a distance of up to 150 yards. Specific vision abilities required by this classification include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing abilities required by this classification includes those which permit the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively in person and by telephone and to discern safety warnings such as alarms and emergency warning sounds. While performing the duties of this classification, the employee works in a public building setting where the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and that includes exposure to chemicals and occasional inclement weather.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $17.27 - $18.13 per hour
