General Summary:
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in a medical environment, ensuring a safe and hygienic setting for patients, staff, and visitors. This role involves disinfecting surfaces, managing biohazardous waste, and adhering to strict health and safety protocols. Custodians working in a medical environment need familiarity with cleaning procedures, knowledge of infection control and medical waste disposal, physical stamina, and teamwork skills to perform their duties effectively and safely. This role is essential in maintaining a clean and safe healthcare environment, reducing the risk of infection and ensuring patients, visitor, and staff well-being. All tasks will be performed while supporting the policies, goals and objectives of South Central Primary Care Center Inc.
Employment Status: Hourly – FSLA Non-Exempt Status
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs routine cleaning of patient rooms, exam rooms, hallways, restrooms, and common areas.
Disposes of biohazardous and non-hazardous waste following medical waste disposal protocols.
Collects and disposes of trash.
Disinfects high-touch surfaces, medical equipment, and furniture to prevent infection spread.
Refills sanitation supplies (soap, hand sanitizer, gloves, paper products) as needed.
Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and buffs floors to maintain a sterile environment.
Assists with deep-cleaning protocols during outbreaks or special circumstances.
Follows OSHA, CDC, and facility-specific safety guidelines for medical sanitation and infection control standards.
Reports any maintenance or supply issues, spills, broken equipment, or safety hazards immediately.
Keeps job sites in a clean and orderly condition.
Documents work completed; reports job outcome/supplies used via written and/or verbal communication.
Works with solvents, cleansers, disinfectants, and other common industrial chemicals in a safe and efficient manner.
Completes tasks in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
Keeps cleaning supplies in stock.
Understands regular hours/shifts may vary as janitorial coverage needs dictate; may include nights and/or weekends
Ensures building security when leaving after hours.
Performs other job duties as assigned by Management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to manage time efficiently.
Ability to work well unsupervised.
Ability to work safely with a variety of cleaning supplies and equipment.
Understanding safety protocols related to handling biohazardous materials.
Familiarity with and ability to read and understand an MDS book and product labels
Ability to troubleshoot.
Knowledge of proper cleaning, infection prevention, and infection control procedures and techniques.
Ability to work independently and follow schedules while maintaining attention to detail.
A positive customer-service oriented attitude.
Self-starter who demonstrates professionalism and can work independently.
Flexible schedule to meet the needs of the business.
Good communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
Typical Working Conditions:
Incumbents require travel to facilities.
Some work is conducted outdoors.
Requires traveling.
Work may be stressful at times and may require occasional evening or weekend work.

Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED
Current Georgia Driver's License
Clean Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)
2-3+ years previous janitorial, housekeeping, or sanitation experience, preferably in a healthcare or institutional setting.
Use of common measurement tools and gauges.
Basic math, reading, and comprehension skills.
Basic computer and internet skills, to include ability to access and respond to emails via company email
Medical sanitation or certification in environmental services or sanitation certifications preferred.
