Position Title: Custodian

Location: Monroe County ISD Main Campus

Reports To: Director, Building and Grounds

Salary/Benefits: Starting hourly wage $21.45, as specified in the MEA-ESPA Agreement

wage schedule; single medical, dental and vision benefits according to

Master Agreement with the ESPA; benefits prorated if less than 30 hours

per week;

Available: July 1, 2026. Full-time position

Schedule: Monday – Friday; 1:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. (includes 30-minute unpaid lunch)

Probation Period: Ninety (90) working days.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty

Essential Duties:

  • Assist in maintaining seasonal groundwork (snow, lawn, etc.).
  • Assist in regulating heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide

temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water
and electricity.

  • Clean and preserve designated spaces, equipment, facilities in building(s).
  • Assist visiting public utilizing the facilities with directions within the building and on the
grounds and in obtaining and setting up needed equipment.
  • Deal with all emergency custodial duties throughout the buildings while on duty.
  • Assist in an ongoing program of general maintenance upkeep and repair for all facilities,

including Holiday Camp.

  • Move furniture and/or equipment within and between buildings as activities require.
  • Repair and assemble furniture and equipment as necessary.
  • Apply pesticides and chemicals as needed to control weeds, rodents, and insects.
  • Assist in the inspection, cleaning and maintenance of all school vehicles and equipment
as needed.
  • Responsible for maintaining bus/storage building in proper order.
  • Unload delivery trucks.
  • Perform general and scheduled maintenance on tractor, mowers and other equipment.
  • Responsible for performing day custodian duties in his/her absence, as directed by
Supervisor.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to use ladders up to 40 feet.
  • Ability to obtain CDL.
  • Drive a school bus when needed.
  • Understanding of hand and power tools and their safe use.
  • Regular, predictable in-person attendance.
  • Follow work rules.
  • Carry out all other responsibilities as assigned by Director or Assistant Superintendent.

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous custodial/maintenance experience preferred.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Driver's license with excellent driving record.
  • Must possess current CDL school bus driver license (with "S" and "P" endorsements)
and hold a school bus driving certificate for advanced bus driver training.
  • Must receive Federal Motor Carrier Safey Administration clearance.
  • Subject to State and Federal drugs/alcohol testing program.
  • This position is subject to DOT drug testing as a safety-sensitive employee. DOT

Regulation 49 CFR Part 40 does not authorize the use of Schedule I drugs, including

marijuana, for any reason.

SKILLS/OTHER

  • Ability to read and interpret operating manuals and other related documents.
  • Demonstrated aptitude/competence for minor maintenance responsibilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and
community.
  • Ability to perform duties with an awareness of District requirements and Board of

Education policies.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with

hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit and talk or hear.

The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools,

or controls; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is

frequently required to bend at the neck more than the average person. The employee

must regularly lift up to 50 lbs. such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks.

Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as salt and bulk

furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, and

scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and

peripheral vision. The employee needs to be able to tell where a sound is coming from

and hear in a noisy environment. The employee may frequently be required to climb

ladders.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures

above 90 degrees and below 32 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery

surfaces. Employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee

may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products,

degreasers and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time

constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The

employee must work with public and other staff, continuously meeting multiple demands

from several people.
