JOB SUMMARYThe 1st Shift Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and secure school building throughout the school day. The 1st Shift Custodian arrives to work prior to the school day in order to have the time to verify the conditions of the school building and grounds for cleanliness, order and safety. The 1st Shift Custodian is a valued member of the staff and as such, is responsible for assisting the school administration in providing the most desirable environment for the education program at Sizer School in the most efficient manner.Position Type: Full Time (12 months/40 hours per week)Work hours: 5:30 AM - 2:00 PM (with 30 min meal break)Paid Holidays and PTO (sick, personal, and vacation)MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES1. Assist with maintenance supply and equipment orders.2.
Tour the entire building in order to assess if the exterior envelope is intact and all essential systems are working for the start of the school day. Communicate to the Director any necessary actions.3. Check email and message board for instructions from the Director and/or second shift custodians and prioritize tasks.4. Work to complete all daily tasks at a high level of quality and efficiency.
The tasks include, but are not limited to: Using floor machines and mops, dry mopping, sweeping, vacuuming and dustingCleaning windowsFurniture set up and breakdownRestocking bathroom supplies and monitoring supply inventoriesOn and off campus errands to make deliveries and pick up suppliesReceiving packages and collecting packing slipsAssisting and supporting teachers and other school staffGrounds keeping, mowing, trimming, and leaf removalSnow removal and operating and maintaining associated equipmentMaintenance and minor repairs of building equipment and fixturesEnsure that trash and recycling is removed throughout the building on a scheduled basis5. Establish proper levels of custodial supplies and maintain by ordering all necessary cleaning and maintenance products.6. Support the lunch schedule to ensure that all of the trash cans are emptied through the lunch and the floors are free from debris and slip/fall issues. Support leaders through any and all lunch periods as needed.7.
Interface with staff to ensure classroom space is adequate. Make any modifications as necessary for student safety.8. Ensure that work orders are completed for non-emergency issues by monitoring the Facilities Help Desk.9. Assist in the set-up needs for special events, community assemblies, special meetings, and classrooms as coordinated by the Director.
Review received Facilities Use Requests for compliance to the event needed. Adjust schedule to accommodate events. Including overtime on weekends.10. Maintain skills and annual certification for the Right to Know training required by OSHA and Massachusetts Department of Labor.11.
Contribute to all work/cleaning requirements during vacation periods, with peak cleaning required during summer months.12. Unlock and lock front doors at designated times for student arrival.13. All other custodial duties/needs as assigned by the Director._______________________________________________________________________QUALIFICATIONSBe physically able to lift, bend, stoop, climb and reach.Must be able to lift 50 lbs. on an ongoing basis.Must have the ability to operate floor cleaning equipment.Prior experience with stripping and waxing floors.Must have the ability to operate grounds keeping equipment.
(zero turn mower, weed whacker, leaf blower, snowblower and tractor with front snowblower and spreader)Must be able to read and understand equipment owner's manuals.Must be able to perform preventive maintenance using appropriate tools.Have knowledge and experience in proper use of power tools.Must be able to speak and read the English language.Knowledge of and the ability to use Microsoft Office and Google SuitePrior custodial experience preferred.Must have good communication skills.OSHA 10 or obtain within 90 days of employment.Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.Must have a valid US Driver's License without any operating limits.Must live within a 45-minute commute to the school.Must have a high-level of integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality.Must be able to pass the Massachusetts state CORI check and the National Criminal Background Check.
