Custodian/Maintenance Worker

Reports to: Church Administrator

Status: Part-time (15-20 hours/week)

FLSA: Non-exempt

Position Purpose: Provides day-to-day maintenance, cleaning, and grounds work of the church.

Schedule: Approximately 15–20 hours per week across 3–4 weekday shifts (hours flexible with consistent schedule). Strong preference for a regular Sunday shift (8:00am–1:00pm). Additional hours may be available for candidates with advanced maintenance skills. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be offered to support rentals and events; these shifts may be compensated at an overtime rate, as applicable.

Essential Functions:

  • Regular Cleaning: Cleans all four bathrooms, including floor, sinks, toilets (inside and outside), stalls, makes sure supplies are restocked and in working order, takes out any organic trash to the bins, removes debris from parking lot, sidewalks, and lawn.
  • Weekly Cleaning: Cleans the entire church property. Vacuums all carpets, mops floors, waxes Parish Hall floor, washes windows and glass doors, wipes down kitchen counters and tables, cleans all classroom tables, collects trash and recyclables, places trash and recyclables on the curb for weekly pickup and returns bins on Friday. Takes inventory of janitorial supplies with the supervisor.
  • Monthly Cleaning: Dusts high-reaching corners in the Sanctuary and halls, spot cleans carpets with shampoo, cleans light switches and wall splatters, organizes storage spaces for equipment.
  • Grounds: Removes snow from sidewalks and pathways and applies de-icing materials as needed. (We do have a snowplow service; this is for interim periods)
  • Maintenance: Makes minor repairs and performs incidental maintenance. Maintains a calendar of routine maintenance and helps coordinate these efforts. Also, takes routine care of appliances and tools such as cleaning out the vacuum cleaner, bleeding and cleaning the snow blower, removing calcium from salt spreaders, etc. Researches and identifies qualified vendors for maintenance and repair needs; coordinates with the supervisor for budget approval and prior to scheduling work. For candidates with relevant experience, there may be opportunities to take on more advanced maintenance work, with additional hours available.
  • Rentals/Facilities use: Provides support for Rites of Passage rentals (typically on Saturdays, outside of normal hours worked) and larger rentals by opening, closing, cleaning up receptions, and helping attendees. Assists with setup and cleanup for church activities.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Helps other committees when necessary
  • Other duties as assigned when needed

Sunday Responsibilities:

  • Operates dishwasher after rentals and church events; sets up tables and chairs for coffee hour; cleans and resets tables; returns tables and chairs to storage; removes trash from pews; and assists with general Sanctuary cleanup following services.

Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements:

  • Basic literacy in English.
  • Basic computer and email skills.
  • Basic understanding of handywork.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work outside during all seasons.
  • Ability to work with volunteers and staff.
  • Prior custodial or facilities experience preferred but not required.

Pay: $20.00 per hour
