Jones-Keena & Co., an award-winning luxury interior design firm based in Troy, Michigan, is seeking a skilled Upholsterer / Upholstery Specialist to join our in-house custom upholstery studio.
Our team produces high-end, bespoke upholstered furniture for residential clients who value exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with experienced artisans on a wide variety of custom pieces, furniture restorations, and original furniture builds in a collaborative studio environment.
We are looking for someone who takes pride in true craftsmanship and enjoys creating beautifully finished furniture that will be enjoyed for years to come.
The ideal candidate will have experience working with a wide range of fabrics and leather goods and be comfortable interpreting design layouts and sketches. Candidates should also have the ability to upholster furniture from start to finish, including applying outside backs and finishing details. Experience assisting with or constructing furniture frames is highly desirable.

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Measure and cut fabric and upholstery materials according to design specifications
- Upholster furniture pieces including sofas, chairs, and custom-built furniture
- Tear down existing furniture pieces for re-covering and restoration
- Repair upholstery on existing furniture to restore appearance and function
- Apply inside and outside backs, bias welts, and double welts
- Tie springs when required
- Apply cambric and jute or elastic webbing
- Sew upholstery components by machine or by hand
- Assist with furniture frame construction, modifications, or repairs when needed
- Perform basic wood touch-up and minor repairs when required
- Inspect finished pieces to ensure quality standards and client specifications are met
- Work with designers to select appropriate fabrics and materials
- Assist with furniture pick-ups, deliveries, and installation at client job sites
- Assist with interior design installations when needed
- Maintain accurate records of time spent on each project for job costing purposes
- Complete and maintain project-related documentation
- Maintain tools and equipment in excellent working condition
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace
- Collaborate with team members to meet project deadlines
- Stay informed on upholstery techniques, materials, and industry trends
- Other duties as assigned by management
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Minimum 3+ years of upholstery experience preferred
- Experience working with a wide range of fabrics and leather including linen, mohair, supple leather, and stiff leather
- Strong knowledge of upholstery techniques, materials, and tools
- Ability to read and interpret design plans, layouts, and work orders
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to interact professionally with clients and team members
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Valid driver's license required
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Technical training in upholstery or furniture manufacturing preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and maneuver 50–100 pounds on a regular basis
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and stand for extended periods while working on furniture pieces
- Manual dexterity to operate upholstery tools and machinery
- Frequent use of hand tools including staple guns, scissors, sewing machines, and tack hammers
- Strong hand-eye coordination for precise cutting and assembly
- Visual acuity for detailed tasks such as pattern alignment and inspection
- Comfortable working in a workshop environment with exposure to varying noise levels, dust, adhesives, and fabrics
