Data Center Electrical Design Manager

Job Summary

The Data Center Electrical Design Manager will lead electrical design management, technical standards development, consultant and contractor coordination, design quality control, construction support, commissioning, and risk management for data center and mission-critical facility projects. This role serves as the electrical technical lead and is responsible for driving technical implementation from schematic design and design development through construction documentation and project delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with business stakeholders, project management teams, design consultants, operations teams, and contractors to define design criteria and lead the development of the Basis of Design (BOD).
  • Serve as the electrical technical leader and manage design consultants through schematic design, design development, and construction documentation.
  • Manage design-build contractors and related vendors to ensure that design and construction solutions align with BOD, business requirements, technical standards, and delivery expectations.
  • Support the Project Manager on critical technical matters, including RFIs, technical bulletins, submittals, shop drawing reviews, factory inspections, commissioning, and system handover.
  • Evaluate and promote energy-efficient and highly reliable electrical solutions while balancing cost, efficiency, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Lead or guide the development of detailed scripts, implementation plans, and risk control measures for Change Management Request (CMR) activities.
  • Travel domestically and internationally as needed to lead or participate in engineering studies, electrical audits, startup testing, system commissioning, and full commissioning activities.
  • Review mission-critical electrical systems, operational risks, and retrofit plans for local data center operations teams.
  • Lead or participate in Root-Cause Analysis (RCA) for equipment failures, power outages, and other electrical incidents, and drive corrective actions to closure.
  • Direct consultants and contractors, review installed work quality, and ensure project delivery complies with design intent, applicable codes, and quality standards.
  • Respond to emergencies as required and provide technical judgment and decision-making support for critical electrical systems.
  • Drive the development and continuous improvement of corporate electrical design standards, technical specifications, process documents, and best practices for data center projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of six years of professional experience in building design, construction, MEP engineering, or critical facility projects.
  • Strong knowledge of high-voltage and medium-voltage power systems, including 115kV and 12kV substation design.
  • In-depth understanding of mission-critical data center power distribution systems, including data center electrical topologies, UPS, PDU, generators, PLC-based transfer controllers, and Building Management Systems.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, building codes, and safety standards, including NFPA, NEC, UFC, and UBC.
  • Solid project delivery experience, including design, procurement, construction, cost estimating, commissioning, and handover processes.
  • Cross-discipline understanding of critical facility systems, with the ability to coordinate electrical, HVAC, controls, architectural, and operations requirements.
  • Strong technical judgment, troubleshooting ability, risk identification, and decision-making skills, with the ability to provide executable solutions under pressure.
  • Experience managing design consultants, general contractors, subcontractors, and cross-functional project teams.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Visio, Bluebeam, and SKM software.
  • Ability to travel regionally and internationally, up to 30%.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Electrical Professional Engineer registration or equivalent professional certification is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in data center or mission-critical design, construction, and operations is preferred.
  • Experience with large-scale data centers, cloud infrastructure, critical facilities, or high-reliability power infrastructure projects is preferred.
  • Experience developing corporate technical standards, design guidelines, or process frameworks is preferred.
  • Experience with overseas project delivery, multicultural team collaboration, or international consultant management is preferred.

Key Performance Indicators

  • **Delivery & Schedule Management** Define engineering objectives for greenfield and leased IDC projects. Ensure design and testing SLA compliance and on-time delivery of critical automation modules through integrated schedule planning.
  • **Quality, Safety & Risk Management** Manage quality, safety, cost, and risk across the full delivery lifecycle. Proactively mitigate issues to prevent major quality or safety incidents, compliance risks, and asset loss.
  • **Technical Coordination & Decision-Making** Oversee multi-disciplinary design, including electrical, HVAC, and related systems. Lead design reviews and technical decisions while aligning R&D innovation with operations and planning requirements.
  • **Standardization & Organizational Capability** Lead the development of corporate technical standards, design specifications, and process frameworks. Drive industry norm formulation and external technical collaboration to enhance organizational capability and industry influence.

Pay: $53,000.00 - $63,000.00 per year
