The Data Center Fiber Project Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing all aspects of fiber optic infrastructure projects within mission-critical data center environments. This role requires strong technical knowledge of inside plant (ISP) and outside plant (OSP) fiber systems, excellent communication skills, and the ability to drive projects from design through closeout—on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with customer and industry standards.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience leading fiber installation teams, managing subcontractors, ensuring safety compliance, and delivering top-tier quality on high-demand data center builds or retrofits.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Coordination
- Oversee end-to-end management of data center fiber projects, including design review, material procurement, scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Coordinate with general contractors, electrical contractors, and customer representatives to align project timelines and deliverables.
- Develop and maintain project documentation such as RFIs, submittals, as-builts, and closeout packages.
Technical Oversight
- Provide technical direction for fiber routing, termination, splicing, testing, and certification.
- Ensure adherence to BICSI, TIA/EIA, and NEC standards for structured cabling and fiber installations.
- Verify test results, OTDR traces, and power meter readings meet specified performance criteria.
Team Leadership
- Supervise project crews, foremen, and subcontractors, maintaining a culture of safety and accountability.
- Conduct site meetings, daily reports, and progress updates to track productivity and address field challenges promptly.
- Mentor field staff in proper installation techniques, safety procedures, and quality assurance practices.
Budget & Cost Control
- Develop project budgets and track costs against estimates.
- Manage change orders, purchase orders, and invoice approvals to maintain profitability.
- Identify potential risks or scope gaps early and communicate proactively with stakeholders.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce all company and client safety policies, including JHA reviews, toolbox talks, and PPE requirements.
- Ensure all work complies with OSHA standards, data center access protocols, and security clearances.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience managing fiber optic installation projects, preferably in data centers or large-scale commercial facilities.
- Proven track record delivering projects involving structured cabling, network infrastructure, and/or mission-critical environments.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of fiber optic installation, splicing, testing, and documentation practices.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Procore, or equivalent project management software.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, schematics, and one-line diagrams.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills—able to interface with customers and internal teams alike.
- Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities under pressure.
Certifications (Preferred)
- BICSI RCDD, DCDC, or Technician certification
- OSHA 30 or higher
- PMP or equivalent project management credential
Working Conditions
- Primary work sites include active data centers and construction environments.
- Must be willing to travel regionally to project locations.
- Occasional night or weekend work may be required based on customer schedules and cutover timelines.
