Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced
Data Governance Specialist
with 6+ years of hands-on experience in defining and implementing data governance frameworks, data classification models, business glossaries, data catalogs, and access control mechanisms. The ideal candidate will work closely with business and technology teams to ensure data is well‑classified, high‑quality, secure, and trusted across the organization.
Key Responsibilities

Data Classification & Metadata Management
-
Propose and define the data classification framework for the organization, including Personal Data, Sensitive Data, Confidential, Financial, Business-Critical, etc.

Identify and document target tables across business domains.
-
Perform metadata tagging of critical tables, applying tags such as:
-
Division / Domain
-
PII (Personal / Sensitive data)
-
Financial / Confidential
-
Business Criticality (Revenue, Sales, Inventory, Stock, etc.)
-
Any additional relevant data sensitivity or business tags
-
Critical Data Elements (CDE) Management
-
Identify Critical Data Elements (CDEs) within key systems, KPIs, and processes.
-
Define business definitions, data rules, transformations, and calculation logic for KPIs.
-
Create and maintain Data Quality Rules for each CDE to ensure accuracy, completeness, consistency, and integrity.

Work with data owners and stewards to establish CDE ownership and accountability.

Business Glossary Development
-
Build and maintain a business glossary capturing standard definitions for:

Tables
-
Fields
-
Business terms
-
KPIs
-
Ensure alignment between business and technical teams by maintaining consistent terminology.
-
Data Cataloging
-
Drive creation and sustenance of a data catalog across enterprise systems.
-
Evaluate possibility of leveraging ER (Entity Relationship) tools or existing metadata management platforms for cataloging.

Maintain documentation on data lineage, table relationships, and data flows.

Data Security & Access Controls
-
Define and implement role-based access control (RBAC) frameworks.
-
Work with security teams to ensure PII data encryption, masking, tokenization, or anonymization as needed.

Ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations (GDPR, DPDP Act, ISO standards, etc.).

Stakeholder Collaboration & Governance Enablement
-
Partner with business, technology, and data engineering teams to operationalize governance standards.
-
Conduct workshops to educate functional teams on governance practices, data quality, and classification frameworks.
-
Provide guidance on data governance tools, best practices, and process improvement.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Management, or related fields.

6+ years of hands-on experience in Data Governance, Metadata Management, Data Quality, or similar roles.

Strong understanding of:

Data classification models
-
CDE frameworks
-
Business glossary and catalog tools
-
Information security principles
-
RBAC and access control policies
-
Experience with data governance/metadata tools (e.g., Collibra, Alation, Informatica EDC, Atlan, Azure Purview, ER/Studio, ERwin, etc.).

Knowledge of SQL and relational data structures is preferred.

Strong communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
