Job Opening: Data Specialist

Location: Kentwood, MI

Requirements: Candidates must submit both a resume and a cover letter to be considered.

Candidates must have a strong interest in supporting neighbors facing hunger in West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. This interest should come with a curiosity about what drives the need for food assistance and how best to address it. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel, is essential. (Folks who know how to write a VLOOKUP, we’re looking at you.) An affinity for working with numbers, strong written communication skills, and the ability to juggle multiple tasks at once are also key. Candidates should be prepared to tackle projects and solve problems independently but also remain excited to share results with others.

A degree in a relevant field is preferred. Technical skills obtained through hobbyist-level engagement with mathematics, statistics, computer science, programming, or a related subject are a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Acquire datasets from primary and secondary sources, cleaning and organizing them as needed.
  • Visualize available data in tables, charts, and maps to make it palatable for analysis.
  • Coordinate with internal teams to identify and leverage data relevant to their activities.
  • Find, read, and annotate published research and data from governmental, scholarly, journalistic, and nonprofit sources.
  • Draft summaries of metrics and trends for use in internal and external communication.
  • Enter, retrieve, and analyze donor data to support development and marketing activities.
  • Address special requests and explain notable trends and outliers.
  • Investigate and diagnose data issues.
  • Socialize data and research with stakeholders to make lessons actionable.
  • Participate in network conversations with community partners, other food banks, the Food Bank Council, and Feeding America regarding newly released research and best practices for storing and utilizing data.
  • Contribute to mandatory reporting to Feeding America and other partners.

Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
