Database Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Database Engineer to take full ownership of our product’s database ecosystem. Our platform powers large-scale operational workflows and relies on complex relational databases with hundreds of tables, intricate stored procedures, and performance‑critical workloads.
You will be responsible for database development, optimization, maintenance, monitoring, and ongoing enhancements ensuring our data layer is robust, scalable, and high‑performing.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in complex backend environments and enjoys solving challenging data architecture and performance problems.

Key ResponsibilitiesDatabase Development & Architecture

  • Design, develop, and maintain database schemas, tables, views, stored procedures, functions, and triggers.
  • Collaborate with backend engineering teams to translate application requirements into efficient database structures.
  • Review and optimize existing database design to support scalability, performance, and long-term maintainability.
  • Implement best practices for relational modeling and normalization/denormalization strategies.

Performance Optimization

  • Diagnose and resolve database bottlenecks, slow queries, deadlocks, and long‑running transactions.
  • Conduct SQL performance tuning using execution plans, indexing strategies, and query refactoring.
  • Optimize stored procedures, triggers, and database processes for speed and efficiency.
  • Work with engineering to ensure application‑database interaction is optimized.

Maintenance & Reliability

  • Manage database deployments, versioning, migrations, and rollback plans.
  • Perform routine health checks, monitoring, and maintenance tasks.
  • Ensure high availability, backup strategies, recovery planning, and data integrity.
  • Support production environments, including debugging issues and performing root‑cause analysis.

Enhancements & Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve database performance, security, and stability.
  • Introduce automation for routine processes (backups, indexing, cleanup tasks, alerts).
  • Evaluate and recommend new database-related tools, frameworks, and best practices.
  • Contribute to the evolution of our data infrastructure as the product and user base grow.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with backend engineers, QA teams, DevOps, and product stakeholders.
  • Participate in code reviews involving SQL or database‑centric logic.
  • Provide guidance on database usage patterns and best practices to engineering teams.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 3–7+ years of hands-on experience as a Database Engineer, or Backend Engineer with strong SQL/database expertise.
  • Expert-level proficiency with SQL and stored procedure development.
  • Deep understanding of database performance tuning, indexing strategies, execution plans, and query optimization.
  • Strong experience with relational databases such as
  • Microsoft SQL Server,
  • PostgreSQL,
  • MySQL, or equivalent
  • Experience working with large, complex databases containing extensive tables and stored procedures.
  • Solid understanding of database internals, transactions, concurrency, and locking mechanisms.
  • Experience with database monitoring tools and APM solutions.
  • Knowledge of ETL pipelines, data workflows, and schema migration tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a SaaS or high‑traffic product environment.
  • Familiarity with cloud-hosted database services (Azure).
  • Exposure to DevOps tools such as CI/CD pipelines, Git, and containerization.
  • Understanding of data warehousing concepts is a plus.
  • Ability to write clean, maintainable SQL and documentation.

Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ownership mindset and ability to work independently.
