Dean of Operations, Student Services and School Safety Job Description

JOB PURPOSE: The Dean of Operations / Student Services and School Safety is a senior member of the school leadership team responsible for overseeing campus operations, student culture systems and school safety. This leader ensures that the school operates safely, compliantly, and efficiently while cultivating a structured, achievement-oriented and student-centered environment.

This potion serves as a visible and proactive presence on campus, promoting a secure, respectful, and supportive school climate. This role merges responsibilities for maintaining campus safety with student behavior management, discipline oversight, and school culture leadership. The ideal candidate is calm under pressure, deeply student-centered, and committed to holistic school safety and student well-being.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, systems-driven, and skilled in student culture leadership — able to manage operational priorities while maintaining high expectations for behavior, safety, and accountability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

School Safety and Guardian Duties

  • Serve as an armed security presence on school grounds in compliance with the Florida Guardian Program.
  • Monitor entrances, perimeters, and school facilities to deter suspicious or unsafe activity.
  • Respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies, threats, or safety concerns.
  • Conduct and assist with regular emergency preparedness drills and crisis planning.
  • Coordinate with local law enforcement, school resource officers, and district security personnel.
  • Assist during student arrival, dismissal, lunch, and transitions.

Dean of Students’ Duties

  • Enforce the school’s student code of conduct with consistency and fairness.
  • Lead the investigation and resolution of disciplinary incidents, ensuring due process and documentation.
  • Implement and support restorative practices and positive behavior interventions.
  • Monitor attendance, truancy, and student engagement; follow up with students and parents or guardians as needed.
  • Work closely with students to support their academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth.
  • Partner with teachers, administration, counselors, and families to address behavioral challenges and build student support plans.
  • Promote a school culture of respect, accountability, and community responsibility.
  • Provide training and support to staff on classroom management, de-escalation, and conflict resolution.

Campus Operations Leadership

  • Oversee non-instructional operational systems including arrival, dismissal, transportation coordination, and campus logistics
  • Manage facilities operations, maintenance coordination, and vendor relationships
  • Develop and maintain efficient operational procedures that support instructional priorities
  • Collaborate with school leadership resource allocation
  • Monitor operational performance metrics and implement improvements
  • Recommend adding food service program

Compliance & Regulatory Oversight

  • Collaborate with principal to ensure compliance with federal, state, and authorizer requirements
  • Maintain oversight of student records and required reporting systems
  • Ensure adherence to applicable regulations, including Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
  • Coordinate compliance documentation, audits, and reporting submissions

Student Culture & Discipline Systems

  • Implement, and monitor school-wide behavior and discipline systems
  • Lead student accountability structures aligned to the school’s code of conduct
  • Conduct discipline investigations and manage restorative or corrective actions
  • Partner with instructional staff to ensure consistent behavior expectations
  • Facilitate re-entry meetings and family conferences related to student discipline

Attendance & Student Support

  • Monitor attendance data and lead attendance improvement strategies
  • Oversee truancy intervention processes
  • Collaborate with counselors and support staff to address student needs
  • Ensure implementation of student support plans and required accommodations

Safety & Risk Management

  • Collaborate with principal to lead campus safety planning and emergency preparedness protocols
  • Coordinate drills and crisis response procedures
  • Oversee incident reporting and documentation
  • Ensure the campus environment meets health and safety standards

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must meet all requirements of the Florida Guardian Program (successful completion of Sheriff’s Office-approved Guardian training upon selection, a valid Florida driver’s license, a valid concealed weapon/firearm license, proof of passing background check, proof of passing a 10-Panel drug screening test, and proof of a passing psychological evaluation).
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, criminal justice, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in school settings, student services, law enforcement, military, or counseling strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to work with children and adolescents with empathy, authority, and fairness.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and behavior management.
  • Calm, professional demeanor under pressure and excellent decision-making skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially in disciplinary documentation and parent communication.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with school enrollment numbers and organizational salary and benefit policy. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the Organization.

FLSA OVERTIME CATEGORY
Job is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

EVALUATION
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Organizational Policy.

The Organization retains the sole right and discretion to make changes to this job description. Any employee making changes unauthorized by Human Resources Department will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, Business Administration, Public Administration, Counseling or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in school leadership, operations, or student services
  • Demonstrated experience managing student discipline systems
  • Strong knowledge of school compliance requirements
  • Ability to manage multiple high-priority responsibilities simultaneously

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Job Type: Full-time (12 Month Employee)

Salary: $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
