POSITIONS PURPOSE
The Dean of Teaching & Learning provides leadership, mentoring, coaching, and focus on continuous improvement that inspires and assures innovative pedagogy, high-levels of faculty-student engagement, and a faculty culture devoted to student learning and success. This positions serves as the direct supervisor of the teaching faculty, ensuring that the faculty have the tools that they need to be successful and are continually improving in their quality of teaching. The Dean reports to the Provost/Vice President of Academic and Administration and is part of the Academic Cabinet.
JOB DUTIES & ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS
- Leadership: Serves as a member of the Academic Cabinet; works collaboratively with others across campus; participates in the development of a strategic vision, goals and objectives in support of CTX academic priorities; develops annual goals and objectives in Teaching and Learning and implements the proper assessments to ensure continual improvement; demonstrates accountability in achieving goals established;
- Mission and Culture Alignment: Ensures that all teaching and learning takes place in ways that support our university mission and culture, namely a Christian institution of higher education that supports students of all backgrounds with a firm commitment to equity and access in higher education
- Oversight of Full-Time Faculty: Serves as supervisor of all full-time teaching faculty; meets with every faculty member regularly; ensures that observations, evaluations and growth plans happen in a timely manner; serves as the point person for immediate issues for the faculty;
- Professional Development: Works with Faculty leadership to ensure effective training opportunities for all faculty through the Dinda Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning; facilitates the Summer professional development series for Faculty; works with each faculty to recommend and approve professional development plans; works closely with the Instructional Design and Online Learning teams to ensure that faculty have access to resources and training to use technology effectively in the classroom;
- Adjunct faculty: Directly supervises the Teaching Faculty Coordinator and Liaison, who has operational responsibility for the engagement and development of adjunct faculty; provides strategic direction for the adjunct faculty program as a whole; ensures all faculty are supported, developed, and aligned with institutional expectations; holds the Teaching Faculty Coordinator and Liaison accountable for program quality and adjunct faculty engagement;
- Oversight of Academic Support Programs: Directly supervises the Senior Director of Academic Support Programs, who has operational oversight of Accessibility Services, Tutoring, Library Services, and Mental Health Counseling; provides strategic direction for these programs as a whole; ensures they are aligned with institutional priorities and effectively supporting student success; holds the Director accountable for program quality, staffing, and resource stewardship;
- Faculty Administrative Processes and Operations: Guides and supports faculty through formal institutional processes including advancement in rank, sabbatical requests, scholarship recognition, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions; works with the Executive Committee of the Faculty (ECF) Chair to ensure faculty governance positions and committee appointments are filled in a timely manner; directly oversees and administers faculty operational functions including Faculty Load and Compensation (FLAC), faculty credentialing, and academic integrity cases, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and thorough documentation;
- Teaching: Teaches 1 class (preferably freshman level) in academic discipline each Fall and Spring
- Other duties and functions as needed
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES & PRINCIPLES
- Terminal Degree and 5 years teaching experience required.
- Strong commitment to Christian faith and the vocation of Christian higher education
- Experience in faith-based, liberal arts settings strongly desired
- Management training and supervisory experience required
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal, organizational, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and leadership; to articulate and support CTXs mission, vision and values; and a demonstrated history of strong integrity and high moral character.
- Must be a good listener with a high level of patience and be able to effectively counsel students and faculty.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to articulate and model the Concordia University Texas’ mission, vision, and values

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
- Frequently requires non-traditional work hours including evening and weekend work
- Because this position involves business travel, this position is subject to a driving record review every two years
- Must be able to walk around campus environment across various terrain and stairs and be able to respond quickly to needs
