Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Debt Collection Attorney to join our legal team. In this role, you will be responsible for managing the collection of outstanding debts through legal channels, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, and advocating for our organization’s financial interests. Your expertise in various areas of law, combined with strong negotiation skills and a proactive approach, will be essential in successfully recovering owed funds while maintaining professional relationships. Responsibilities
- Draft, review, and file legal documents related to debt collection proceedings, including pleadings, motions, and settlement agreements.
- Conduct legal research using tools such as Westlaw and LexisNexis to support case strategies and ensure compliance with relevant statutes and regulations.
- Negotiate payment plans, settlements, or alternative resolutions with debtors to maximize recovery outcomes.
- Manage a portfolio of delinquent accounts by initiating contact through phone calls, letters, and legal notices to facilitate timely payments.
- Represent the organization in court proceedings, mediations, or arbitrations related to debt collection cases.
- Collaborate with internal teams such as finance and compliance to develop effective collection strategies aligned with legal standards.
- Maintain accurate case files and documentation of all communications, actions taken, and court filings to ensure transparency and accountability.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in relevant jurisdictions.
- Proven experience in debt collection law or related fields of law.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state laws governing debt collection practices, including the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).
- Proficiency in legal research platforms such as Westlaw and LexisNexis for case analysis and legal updates.
- Excellent negotiation skills with the ability to reach amicable resolutions while protecting organizational interests.
- Familiarity with diverse areas of law, including real estate and litigation practices.
- Strong legal drafting skills combined with meticulous attention to detail in administrative processes.
