POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of a dentist, prepares patients, instruments and materials for the dental procedures, assist dentist during dental procedures, records medical and dental data as well as vital signs, exposes, develops and properly mounts dental radiographs, sterilizes the instruments, keeps all working areas of the clinic clean and sterile. May polish teeth using prophy angle and paste and apply preventive fluoride treatment to teeth. May be expected to perform some clerical duties relating to the department.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED. May be certified dental assistant
- Experience preferred, but will train as needed
- Excellent team player with ability to work well with other dental support staff as well as different dentists
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to relate well to diverse patients and staff
- Ability to learn quickly and prioritize tasks to assure maximum production for the dentists
- Must be willing to work at all Dental Aid sites
- Well-developed sense of humor
- Will train the right candidate
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Under the direct supervision of a dentist, sets and prepares patients for the dental procedures in a timely manner
- Prepares instrument setups and all necessary dental materials for the procedure
- Assists dentist during dental procedures
- Exposes, develops and properly mounts dental radiographs
- Records medical and dental data including vital signs
- Cleans and disinfects the dental operatories, cleans dental laboratory, dark room, sterilization areas
- Properly sterilizes all dental instruments
- Under the direct supervision of he dentist, dental assistant may polish teeth using prophy angle and prophy paste, apply preventive fluoride treatment to teeth, and educate patients about basic oral hygiene.
- Keeps dentist informed about patient flow, and ongoing procedures, and makes timely and efficient decisions to ensure maximum patient satisfaction and maximum production for the dentist
- Participates in rotating seasonal duties such as monthly cleaning of the sterilization machines, weekly cleaning of the X-ray processing machine, sterilization monitoring, stocking of operatories, changing traps, laundry and cleaning kitchen.
- Responsible for careful use and handling of dental equipment, and monitors its proper functioning
- May perform some clerical duties as needed
AUTHORITY /ACCOUNTABILITY:
- The dental assistant reports to the Clinic Manager or Clinic Lead, but must work under direct supervision of the dentist providing care.
- The dental assistant is accountable to the dentist for quality and quantity of clinical work.
- Must comply with all organizational policies, procedures and protocols.
- May be asked to work at any of the Dental Aid clinics
