Position Summary
A Pediatric Dental Assistant supports the dentist and clinical team in providing high-quality dental care to infants, children, adolescents, and patients with special healthcare needs. This role requires excellent communication skills, a positive attitude, attention to detail, and the ability to help create a calm, child-friendly environment for patients and families.
The ideal candidate is dependable, compassionate, team-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced pediatric dental setting.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Prepare treatment rooms and instruments for patient care
- Assist the dentist during examinations and dental procedures
- Take and process dental radiographs
- Perform chair side assisting duties
- Sterilize and maintain instruments and equipment
- Maintain accurate clinical records and charting
- Provide post-operative and home-care instructions to parents/guardians
- Support behavior guidance techniques appropriate for pediatric patients
- Help maintain inventory and clinical supplies
Patient Care & Communication
- Greet patients and families in a warm and professional manner
- Help children feel comfortable and safe during treatment
- Communicate clearly with parents regarding appointments, treatment, and oral hygiene
- Promote positive patient experiences and excellent customer service
Office & Team Responsibilities
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of clinical areas
- Follow infection control and HIPAA compliance procedures
- Attend staff meetings and continuing education training as required
- Work collaboratively with dentists, hygienists, and administrative staff
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED
- Ability to work effectively with children and families
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to multitask in a busy clinical environment
Preferred
- Previous pediatric dental experience
- Experience with electronic dental records and practice management software
- Bi-lingual
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift and move dental equipment and supplies as needed
- Manual dexterity sufficient for dental assisting procedures
Work Environment
This position works in a pediatric dental office environment with frequent interaction with children, parents, and clinical staff. The role may involve exposure to blood-borne pathogens and requires adherence to all infection control standards.
