Position Summary: In addition to performing standard dental assistant duties, the Dental Assistant Lead oversees the daily activities of the dental assistant staff and ensures smooth clinical operations. The Lead ensures high-quality patient care and supports the training and development of dental assistants and dental students. Working under the direction of the Dental Office Manager and in collaboration with the Dental Director, the Dental Assistant Lead upholds safety and compliance standards and contributes to continuous improvement in dental services and patient experience.
Essential Functions:
Dental Assistant Lead I – PB 9
- Provide the overall direction, coordination, evaluation, coaching, and development of dental assistant staff. This includes interviewing, hiring, orienting, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; providing timely feedback, appraising performance, and providing professional development opportunities; and rewarding and disciplining employees. Proactively address and resolve staff concerns and explore and implement methods and procedures for improving departmental workflow and service to clinic patients.
- Determine staff schedules and ensure operational standards are met. Manage employee relations and make certain staff have the necessary resources and support.
- Assist with hiring process and oversee training dental assisting staff.
- Assist with EDR training when necessary for staff.
- Ensure compliance with professional standards & regulatory requirements. Ensure compliance with current dental regulations, infection prevention, laws, and ethics.
- Understand the process of removal of medical waste in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Work collaboratively with the Dental Manager, Dental Director, and Dental Patient Registration Lead to ensure efficient workflow throughout dental department.
- Assist Dental Manager with daily clinic operations as directed.
- Supervise the day-to-day maintenance of all clinical areas including minor equipment adjustments and cleanliness of clinic areas.
- Supervise the maintenance of daily, weekly, monthly, yearly task list.
- Oversee supply inventory and ordering.
- Ability to complete duties up to Dental Assistant Tier IV
Dental Assistant Lead II – PB 10
- All duties listed under Dental Assistant Lead I Plus
- Ability to complete all duties up to Dental Assistant Tier V
Non-Essential Functions:
- Fill in at the front desk, when necessary.
- Perform other related functions as assigned.

Position Requirements:
Dental Assistant Lead II
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Dental Assistant with 5 years dental assisting experience required
- Dental Assistant with x-ray certification required
- Dental Assistant with IHS EFDA Restorative or RDA in Michigan required
- Completion of IHS Periodontal Certification course within eighteen (18) months of start date
- One (1) year supervisory experience in a dental clinic and/or a successful completion of a leadership program preferred. Completion of a leadership program within twelve (12) months of starting required.
- Knowledge of dental terminology is required.
- Knowledge of dental office procedures is required.
- Knowledge of Dental Electronic Health Records is required (preferably in Eaglesoft/EPIC).
- Knowledge of MS Office.
- Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills, and the ability to speak effectively and respond to questions.
- IHS Periodontal Certification required.

Physical Requirements:
- Work is generally sedentary in nature and will frequently require sitting, however standing and walking will occasionally be necessary.
- Frequently required to use hands and fingers to operate equipment.
- Frequently required to talk and hear.
Work environment:
- Work in well-lit, heated, air-conditioned buildings.
- May be exposed to blood, body tissue and fluids as well as hazardous substances/ chemicals.
- Exposure to noise of agitated patients, significant work pace/pressure.
- Occasional local travel may be required.
