Position Purpose:

Under the UCLA–First 5 LA Oral Health Program, the pediatric dentist’s purpose is to act as an in-house specialist to treat young patients (patients who are ages 0-5) who would have otherwise been referred out of the clinic. The position will serve in a training/teaching role with the goal of imparting their specialized knowledge to other members of the health center team. The pediatric dentist will be working closely with the Community Dental Home Coordinator (CDHC) to successful meet the goals of the UCLA–First 5 LA Oral Health Program.

MAJOR POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:

  • Part-time — Fridays, 8 hours.
  • Must be available and willing to work additional days in the future at the new clinic once operational.
  • Works together with the Community Dental Home Coordinator (CDHC) and other members of the clinic’s staff to develop and implement effective referral practices for young children within the clinic (i.e., from primary care medical providers to dental care providers).
  • Ensures that the clinic creates an environment supportive of providing a “21st Century Dental Home”:
    • Comprehensive oral health care services
    • Comprehensive assessment for oral diseases and conditions
    • Preventive dental health protocols based upon individually assessed risk
    • Anticipatory guidance related to growth & development
    • Plan for acute dental trauma
    • Home care instructions regarding proper care of the child’s teeth and gingiva, including prevention, treatment of disease, and maintenance of health
    • Dietary counseling and behavior change
    • Referrals to dental specialists
  • Responsible for the education of the primary care and ob-gyn medical staff on the significance and prevalence of early childhood caries.
  • Teaches medical providers about the important role they can play in promoting and maintaining the oral health of children and perinatal women, and trains them in how to carry out the oral health tasks that they can perform.
  • Motivates medical providers to include oral health components (caries risk assessment, clinical oral assessment, counseling and fluoride varnish application) as a regular part of their well-child and perinatal protocols.
  • Provides an educational role for general dentists to educate and assist as needed for challenging or complex patient visits.
  • Prepares and provides a presentation to the dental staff on treating the young patients include tips and techniques to help increase comfort and familiarity with providing dental care to 0-5 year olds.
  • Provides hands-on training to general dentists, helping to improve their comfort and familiarity in treating young patients, ages 0-5.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess a valid license to practice in California, DEA, and Board Certification.
  • Satisfactory completion of an accredited training program.
  • Current CPR card.
  • Ability to work well with all levels of the healthcare team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Must relate well to all cultural and ethnic groups in the community.

DOE: $100 -$111.40
