Public Works Laborer (Seasonal Full-Time)

Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Public Works Supervisor or Director, the Public Works Laborer performs general labor and maintenance work supporting a wide range of public works projects and Village infrastructure operations. Responsibilities include roadwork, utility system maintenance, groundskeeping, facilities maintenance, snow removal, and related public service activities.
This is a seasonal full-time position scheduled for approximately 40 hours per week. Seasonal employees are not eligible for benefits during the initial employment period. After 90 days, employees may be considered for a transition to a permanent full-time position with benefits, based on performance and operational needs.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Follow all applicable safety procedures while operating equipment, working with chemicals, entering confined spaces, and performing hazardous duties.
- Maintain daily logs of projects, equipment, vehicles, and materials used.
- Assist with routine maintenance and basic repairs of Village vehicles and equipment.
- Perform manual labor related to the maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, alleys, parking lots, and related infrastructure.
- Assist with patching, curb repair, manhole maintenance, snow and ice removal, sign repair, pavement markings, and streetlight maintenance.
- Support water, storm, and sanitary sewer system maintenance projects including hydrants, meters, mains, and utility lines.
- Perform custodial and maintenance tasks for Village buildings and facilities.
- Assist with landscaping and groundskeeping duties, including mowing, trimming, planting, brush pickup, tree trimming, leaf collection, and storm cleanup.
- Operate trucks, loaders, tractors, mowers, dump trucks, blowers, and other public works equipment under supervision.
- Respond professionally to residents and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and the public.
- Assist with special events, seasonal projects, and emergency response activities.
- Be available for on-call, after-hours, weekend, holiday, and emergency work as needed.
- Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- One (1) year or more of experience in general labor, construction, maintenance, or a related field preferred.
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License required.
- CDL Class A license required within one (1) year of employment.
- Knowledge of safety procedures, equipment operation, maintenance practices, and confined space entry.
- Ability to operate public works equipment, tools, and vehicles safely and effectively.
- Ability to perform physical labor and work in outdoor environments year-round.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team.
- Must pass a background check, physical examination, and drug screening prior to employment.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
This position involves significant outdoor work in varying weather conditions and potentially hazardous environments. Duties may require:
- Lifting up to 75 lbs. regularly
- Operating heavy equipment and machinery
- Working in confined spaces, elevated areas, and uneven terrain
- Exposure to loud noise, fumes, chemicals, dust, and traffic conditions
- Performing physically demanding tasks including lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, and prolonged standing
