Position Summary

The Montgomery County Clerk’s Office is seeking a dependable, detail‑oriented Deputy Clerk I to support the Vital Statistics Division and cross‑train with the Recording Division.
This entry‑level position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with the public, is organized, and is interested in developing a long‑term career in public service. The selected candidate will learn the core processes of issuing, reviewing, and maintaining vital records while supporting day‑to‑day division operations.

Key Responsibilities

Vital Statistics Operations

  • Train to process customer transactions related to birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, and other vital records.
  • Assist with verifying eligibility, identity, and all required documentation.
  • Learn proper procedures for handling sensitive and confidential records in accordance with state regulations.
  • Review documents for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Collect fees, issue receipts, and balance transactions as assigned.
  • Provide clear, accurate information to the public while following established state and county requirements.

Recording Division Cross‑Training

  • Learn to process Official Public Records filings, including deeds, liens, releases, and related documents.
  • Review and index documents to ensure they meet statutory recording standards.
  • Assist with data entry, document imaging, and quality control.
  • Support division operations during high‑volume periods or staffing needs.

Administrative & Clerical Support

  • Perform data entry, scanning, filing, and digital/physical record maintenance.
  • Assist with document management workflows and office support tasks as needed.
  • Follow all county policies, procedures, confidentiality laws, and record‑retention requirements.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Professional demeanor and reliability.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow procedures.
  • Basic computer skills and comfort using office technology.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
  • Ability to learn new systems, processes, and regulations.

Preferred

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
  • Prior experience in customer service or administrative roles.
  • Experience working with the public in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Cash‑handling or transaction‑processing experience.
  • Interest in government, legal records, or public service.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, in-office position located at the Montgomery County Clerk’s Office in Conroe, Texas with the possibility to support one of our locations in The Woodlands and New Caney.

Standard business hours apply. The role involves regular interaction with the public and handling official records.

Compensation

This position pays $19.00 per hour ($39,520 annually), paid on a bi‑weekly schedule. Employees are eligible for applicable County cost‑of‑living adjustments (COLAs) and promotional increases in accordance with the County’s step plan.

A probationary increase may be available after six months of service, based on performance and completion of required training, with pay increasing up to $20.24 per hour ($42,099.20 annually).

Upon successful completion of the required educational components for Deputy Clerk I and one year of service with the County Clerk, employees are eligible for promotion to Deputy Clerk II.
