Job Description:

The New York County District Attorney’s is seeking to immediately hire a Deputy Director of Data Analytics and Research. The Manhattan District Attorney’s (DA’s) Office, led by DA Alvin Bragg, pursues a mission of “Moving Justice Forward.” This embodies the Office’s goal to serve and protect the People of New York through the fair administration of justice, without fear or favor.

Reporting to the Director of Research and Strategic Investments, the Deputy Director of Data Analytics and Research leads the Data Analytics and Research Unit. This Unit evaluates and advises on Office policies and initiatives, measures performance against strategic goals, supports program and policy development, improves internal operations, collaborates with external research and government partners, and promotes data transparency within the Office and to the public.

The Deputy Director manages a team of approximately 10 research and policy analysts and data engineers responsible for producing original research, reports, and policy analysis. This role requires strong management, analytical, research and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate can lead a highly technical team while coordinating effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to advance projects.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the unit’s data analytics and research portfolio, including quantitative analyses and research projects conducted by the team and the development of applications and dashboards to track operational trends and progress toward Office goals.
  • Supervise research and policy analysts and data engineers including, conducting regular check-ins, providing mentorship, and leading annual performance evaluations in coordination with the Director.
  • Manage data requests and analysis efforts to inform Office policies and ensure alignment with evidence-based practices, including projects related to prosecutorial strategies, programing options, and operational improvements.
  • Lead the development of data briefs, memoranda, reports, testimony, policy fact sheets, and other materials for internal and external audiences.
  • Work with executive staff and Office leadership to develop, implement, and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) aligned with strategic goals.
  • Manage partnerships with consultants and external organizations, including research institutions and universities on data-driven projects.
  • Coordinate on interagency initiatives focused on collecting and communicating criminal justice data to the public.
  • Expand transparency and accountability efforts with communities served by the Office in coordination with the Office’s Community Partnership Unit.
  • Identify and implement new analytical tools, methods, and techniques to advance Office priorities.
  • Promote data literacy and the use of data-driven decision making across the Office.
  • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field (e.g., social sciences, political science, data science, computer science, criminology, criminal justice, etc.) and four (4) to six (6) years of experience conducting research and working with data in a professional or academic environment; and
  • A minimum of three (3) years of supervisory or management experience in a professional or academic setting.

*Masters degree can substitute for years of experience*

Preferred Requirements/Skills:

  • Proficiency in statistical and programming tools such as R or SAS, Python, or GIS
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as PowerBI or Tableau.
  • Experience in public policy particularly in public safety and/or criminal justice.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with knowledge of research methods and statistical analysis.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and project management skills in a team-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively and manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Intellectually curious, self-motivated, highly organized, detail-oriented, resourceful, and reliable.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to mentor staff and connect technical work to policy and practice.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and related public policy.
  • Familiarity with the New York City criminal justice policy landscape.
  • Experience with relational databases such as Microsoft SQL, Snowflake, similar systems.
  • Training or experience in quantitative and/or qualitative research methodologies.

  • Current office employees: To be eligible for a transfer or promotion, staff must have already served at least one (1) year in their current unit/bureau/department and be in good standing. In addition, must meet the minimum and additional qualifications of the position.
  • Looking for candidates who could commit to one (1) year in the hiring unit.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required for this position
