Deputy Editor

About The Role

We’re currently seeking a full-time Deputy Editor to join our content team in our New York office. In this new role, the Deputy Editor will serve as the connective tissue of Food52’s editorial operation — owning the day-to-day engine and overseeing all written content across Food52.com, newsletters and more.

You will ensure our output is consistent and sharp, shaping what we say on our digital platforms and in the inbox and who we trust to say it. This role blends execution with being part operator, part editor, part commissioner. You’ll know why a story matters before you assign it. You can feel when a sentence is working and when it's just taking up space.

What You’ll Do

Run the Editorial Engine

  • Oversee the editorial team’s daily operations and manage the editorial calendar
  • Direct content creation inclusive of ideating, assigning, writing and editing
  • Translate seasonal tentpoles into clear assignments and publishable output
  • Ensure coverage across Food, Home, Ritual, Improvement, and Leisure
  • Maintain a consistent editorial POV that is credible and grounded in real life

Commission & Cultivate Contributors

  • Identify, recruit, and commission freelance writers and contributors
  • Build a network defined by perspective, expertise, and cultural relevance
  • Assign stories with clear angles and purpose
  • Edit contributors to feel like Food52 without flattening their voice
  • Develop an ecosystem of returning contributors

Own the Newsletter as a Product

  • Lead the editorial vision, voice, and cadence of all Food52 newsletters
  • Turn the newsletter into a habit—something readers anticipate, not just receive
  • Write and edit with a strong, distinct POV
  • Partner with leadership on performance (open rate, CTR, retention) without compromising taste

Bridge Content & Commerce

  • Identify natural shopping moments within editorial and newsletters
  • Partner with Reviews and Partnerships teams on product alignment and key moments
  • Think in terms of curation: fewer, better, more intentional recommendations

What You Bring

  • 6–10+ years experience in digital editorial preferably in food, lifestyle, or culture
  • Experience managing teams and mentoring employees
  • Skill working with influencers, authors and accomplished talent
  • Experience commissioning and editing freelance writers
  • Strong newsletter instincts—you know what’s worth opening and why
  • A clear editorial point of view and high taste level
  • Ability to balance creative instinct with operational rigor
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in journalism or communications

What Success Looks Like

  • Contributors feel distinct, additive, and aligned with Food52’s voice
  • Editorial output is consistent, sharp, and intentional
  • Newsletter become must-open, habit-forming products
  • Readers trust us to decide what’s worth their time and money

Schedule

Hybrid schedule of 3-4 days per week in our office in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, but subject to change on a week to week basis depending on the needs of the business.

Compensation

The compensation for this role is $100,000 to $125,000. The range provided is based on what we reasonably expect to pay for this job as of the time of posting. The actual salary offered will be determined based on multiple factors, including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, job-related knowledge, skills, geographical location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
