The Ferry County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, located in the picturesque mountain town of Republic, Washington, has an immediate opening for a full-time Deputy Prosecuting Attorney and is seeking qualified, interested applicants. Our office offers a manageable caseload and diverse experience in a wide variety of legal issues. Spend 1-2 days per week in court and the remainder of your time in the office preparing cases by drafting, negotiating, and researching. Spend free time and weekends exploring the area’s many recreational activities, including hiking, backpacking, camping, boating and watersports, fishing, hunting, birdwatching and wildlife photography, skiing and snowshoeing, and equestrian activities, to name a few.

Position Details
The Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, under the direction of the Prosecuting Attorney, primarily represents the State of Washington in misdemeanor and some felony criminal cases including hearings, trials, and appeals. This position involves both litigation/courtroom presentation and office practice including advice, analysis and the drafting and review of documents. This is a full-time position, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM daily, 32 hours per week. This is a non-Union position.

Essential Responsibilities (with the expectation that some aspects will be learned on the job):

• Represent the State in misdemeanor and some juvenile and felony cases (including case reviews, charging decisions, pretrial hearings, negotiations, and trial).
• Handle some appeals under the direction of the Prosecuting Attorney (including drafting briefs and providing oral argument, when necessary).
• Work with law enforcement to ensure thorough investigation of cases. Review reports for legal sufficiency and determine appropriate charges to be filed. Handle pretrial hearings such as preliminary appearances, bail hearings, suppression and confession hearings, pleas and sentencings.
• Ensure the Prosecuting Attorney and other concerned parties are informed of case progress and direction. Coordinate with Victim/Witness staff to arrange timely appearances of witnesses.
• Must be able to perform legal research and to analyze and apply legal principles, facts, evidence, and precedent to legal problems.
• Proficiently read and write English. Must be able to present law, facts, evidence, and arguments clearly and logically in written and oral form. Must be able to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on complex or controversial topics both in and out of court.
• Must possess the ability to plan and organize multiple tasks and responsibilities as well as the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Must possess the ability to successfully perform responsible and complex work assignments using independent judgment and personal initiative with minimal supervision.
• Must possess the ability to work well and communicate with coworkers, other county departments, other governmental agencies, and the public. Must use good customer service and telephone skills in stressful situations.
• Attend and successfully complete training as directed by Prosecuting Attorney.
• Learn to use and proficiently operate office and courtroom technology such as computers, databases, and various software programs as necessary.
• Other duties and research projects as assigned.

This position involves tasks that may require routine ergonomic practices, including computer keyboarding skills and writing. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and see. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, and reach with arms and hands. The employee may occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.

Minimum Requirements

• Graduation from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association and must be a licensed attorney in good standing with the Washington Bar Association.
• Requires knowledge of Washington State laws, rules of evidence and procedure, court rules, and Washington Rules of Professional Conduct and ethical standards.
• Must be a United States Citizen.
• Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license.
• Must pass a criminal history background check.
• New law school graduates may apply, but any offer of employment is contingent upon passage of the Washington State Bar Exam.

Salary: $80,000 to $90,000 DOE, with benefits, including employer-contributed medical, vision, and dental insurance and employer-contributed state pension plan.
