Deputy Public Safety Director/Deputy Fire Chief (Full-time) $98,883/Annually (DOQ)

General Description:

This is highly responsible management and administrative work in the efficient delivery of emergency and non-emergency community-based service in a cost effective, innovative and pro-active manner. Work is performed under the direction of the Public Safety Director.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintains strong and active contacts with subordinates to discuss and review status of departmental work plans other programs. Maintains communications. Mentors' subordinate personnel.
  • Assists in setting broad policy objectives and monitors performance of subordinates targeted at the general administration and management of the department.
  • Monitors effectiveness of budgetary applications and programs. Assists in making adjustments as necessary to achieve objectives within available resources and developing long range capital improvement plans. Implements programs aimed at compliance with these plans.
  • Advises Administration on community issues, policies and sources; makes presentations to the BOCC as necessary, as directed by the Public Safety Director.
  • Meets with supervisors and peers to identify organizational issues and solutions.
  • Formulates strategic operations plans with subordinates for major operations. Supports and participates in team building and organizational development programs.
  • Reviews and recommends disciplinary actions.
  • May Supervise the Operations, Fire Prevention and Training sections.
  • Supervises major emergencies.
  • Performs all functions of the Public Safety Director in his absence.

Education and Experience:

  • High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Graduation from an accredited two-year community college with an Associate's Degree in Fire Administration, Fire Science, or related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience at the rank of Lieutenant or higher with a career department comparable in size to Okeechobee County Fire Rescue.

(A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Florida State Minimum Standards Certification as a Firefighter as authorized by F.S.S. 633
  • Florida certified as Fire Officer I
  • Fire Officer II or III (Preferred)
  • Florida certified as a Fire Safety Inspector
  • Fire Safety Inspector II Preferred
  • Florida certified as a Fire Instructor I
  • Fire Instructor II (Preferred)
  • Florida certified Paramedic.
