The Deputy Sheriff plays a crucial role in maintaining law and order within the community. This position involves enforcing laws, preventing crime, and ensuring public safety. The Deputy Sheriff is responsible for responding to emergencies, conducting investigations, and engaging with the community to foster trust and cooperation. Duties

  • Enforce local, state, and federal laws while maintaining peace and order in the community.
  • Respond promptly to emergency calls and incidents, providing assistance as necessary.
  • Conduct thorough investigations of crimes, accidents, and other incidents.
  • Prepare detailed reports documenting incidents, arrests, and investigations.
  • Engage with community members to build positive relationships and promote public safety initiatives.
  • Manage conflicts effectively through de-escalation techniques and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Provide animal care when necessary, including responding to calls involving stray or dangerous animals.
  • Monitor surveillance systems to detect criminal activity or suspicious behavior.
  • Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies on investigations and operations.
  • Maintain proficiency in CPR and first aid to provide immediate assistance in emergencies.

Skills

Qualifications

  • Must be 19 years of age.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony.
  • Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral character.
  • Must not have been dishonorably discharged from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
  • Must meet visual requirements of at least correctable 20/40 in each eye.

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. Previous experience in law enforcement is preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

  • Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
  • Must possess a Certificate of Completion or Certificate of Compliance in basic law enforcement training with the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
  • Must pass the state certification exam and must successfully complete academy training to become certified according to state regulations.
  • Must be CPR certified.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have cardiovascular strength and stamina including the ability to chase subjects on foot (i.e. up/down stairs, around buildings, on city streets, through or in between natural barriers such as water, trees, bushes, etc.. or a combination of these etc.) Must be able to engage in violent and physical confrontations including fighting with subjects and/or re-directing them to the ground. Must be able to physically secure a resisting subject with the appropriate restraints after a physical confrontation. Visual requirements include the ability to use visual depth, distance and color perception, night and peripheral vision. Must be able to use both hands simultaneously and have manual and finger indexterity, flexibility of upper and limbs, strength in upper and lower body, legs, back, arms, and hands. Must be able to wear utility equipment belt capable of carrying multiple pieces of required equipment for extended periods of time. Must possess coordination in legs, arms, hands, eye-hand, steadiness of hand/arm, physical speed, quick reflexes, balance/equilibrium and be able to stand for long periods of time. Ability to run, walk, bend/lean over, twist/turn and maneuvers into and out of small spaces and vehicles. Ability to coordinate rhythm of compression and breaths during CPR. Sketch a crime scene, objects, buildings or other items. Ability to accept acute pain.

Work Environment

Work is performed in various environments. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Depending on assignment, the employee may be required to work long and/or irregular work hours, including evenings and/or weekends. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may encounter the following: chemicals, fumes, toxic substances, insects, noise, vibrations, slippery surfaces, lightning, explosives, oil, tobacco smoke, radiation, radar, allergenic substances, electrical hazards, possible burns, confined or cramped body position for extended periods, irregular eating and sleeping schedules, bodily injury, contact with blood, bodily fluids, infectious or contagious diseases. Weather conditions may include any combination of the following: humidity, low temperatures, high temperatures, heavy rain, exposure to sun, sudden temperature changes, hail, high winds, tornados, flooding, hurricanes. Various terrains may be encountered including high grass, woods, ditches, muck, sand and small hills, as well as water sources such as lakes, rivers, and streams.
