Position Overview

We are seeking motivated Designer/Drafters (Level 1 and Level 2) to support the development and maintenance of engineering drawings, layouts, and design models for facilities, mechanical systems, and components at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

These roles will work closely with engineering teams to produce accurate, high-quality CAD and BIM deliverables that support design, fabrication, construction, and operations. Candidates with mechanical drafting experience and familiarity with BIM environments will be especially well aligned.

Designer/Drafter 1 (Entry Level)

What You Will Do

  • Produce and detail routine drawings and layouts of basic components, facilities, and/or mechanical systems

  • Generate and modify two-dimensional CAD drawings based on provided information

  • Support development of basic BIM models under the direction of senior designers

  • Assist engineering teams with drawing updates and revisions

  • Ensure drawings meet established formatting, mechanical standards, and quality requirements

  • Learn and apply company and industry drafting standards

Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • 1-2 years of related drafting, CAD, or BIM experience (or equivalent training)

  • Basic familiarity with CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, or similar)

  • Exposure to mechanical drawings or components preferred

  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and standards

  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn

Designer/Drafter 2 (Mid-Level)

What You Will Do

  • Produce and detail drawings and layouts of moderate complexity for facilities and mechanical systems

  • Generate and modify CAD drawings and BIM models based on engineering input

  • Apply industry codes, standards, and customer specifications to drawings and work plans

  • Collaborate with mechanical and design engineers to ensure drawing accuracy and quality

  • Perform basic calculations in support of technical design efforts

  • Apply engineering design principles to mechanical components and assemblies

  • Deliver work in accordance with budget and schedule constraints

  • Support process improvement initiatives

  • Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • 3-5 years of related drafting, CAD, or BIM experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

  • Working knowledge of industry drafting standards and mechanical drawing practices

  • Experience developing CAD drawings and BIM models

  • Familiarity with mechanical systems, components, or assemblies

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
