Job Summary
The Detective Sergeant is a supervisory law enforcement position responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Criminal Investigations Division (CID). This role involves managing a team of detectives, directing complex investigations, and ensuring the effective use of community and problem-oriented policing techniques. The Detective Sergeant ensures all cases are thoroughly investigated, properly documented, and prepared for prosecution. Responsibilities include supervising and mentoring investigative staff, coordinating with external agencies, reviewing case reports, and ensuring compliance with established procedures and standards. The Detective Sergeant works under the general direction of the Detective Lieutenant, with performance evaluated through written reports, consultation, and observation. This position requires specialized knowledge of criminal investigations, strong leadership skills, and the ability to handle sensitive and high-priority cases.

Duties

  • Supervise, direct, and support investigators/detectives within Criminal Investigations.
  • Assign and monitor cases, ensuring timely and thorough investigations.
  • Review case reports for accuracy, completeness, and legal sufficiency.
  • Provide guidance and training on investigative procedures, interview techniques, and evidence handling.
  • Assist in the investigation of major crimes, including homicides, sexual assaults, robberies, and fraud.
  • Coordinate with prosecutors, forensic units, and outside law enforcement agencies as needed.
  • Maintain communication with victims, witnesses, and community members during the course of investigations.
  • Ensure compliance with department policies, state laws, and federal regulations. Maintain records, prepare reports, and deliver briefings or testimony in court.
  • Assist in scheduling shifts, approving time off, and managing personnel issues within the division.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and participate in disciplinary processes as needed.
  • Make recommendations on the division’s goals and objectives and directs progress toward attainment.
  • Reviews and approves requests for arrest and search warrants
  • Reviews and approves submitted case files; makes suggestions for further investigations.
  • Prepares documentation for acquisition of large and small equipment.
  • Investigates citizen complaints and takes appropriate action when necessary.

Qualifications

  • Current certification as a Georgia Peace Officer (POST Certified).
  • Minimum of 5 years of law enforcement experience.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • Valid Georgia driver’s license. Strong knowledge of Georgia criminal law, investigative procedures, and case law.
  • Proficiency in report writing, interviewing, and crime scene management.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $58,558.11 - $75,443.00 per year
