Diesel Engine Mechanic

Job Summary

The Diesel Engine Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, repairing, overhauling, and/or maintaining all types of diesel engines, transmissions, brake systems, steering mechanisms, etc. that have been identified as requiring service. The Diesel Engine Mechanic is responsible for moving equipment in and out of the repair facility safely. Accurately complete work orders on any repair, maintenance and/or service performed on a particular piece of equipment including accurately tracking time spent on the repair as well as any parts or other materials removed from inventory to perform the job. The Diesel Engine Mechanic is also responsible for other tasks/projects as determined by management. Must have your own tools to perform repair, maintenance and/or service tasks.

Recommended Years of Experience

3+ years of verifiable Diesel Engine maintenance and repair experience recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Review vehicle's daily inspection repair book to determine required diesel engine transmission, brake system, steering system, etc. service needs;
  • Consult with Management and/or Driver to determine potential root-cause(s) and develop strategy to service the mechanical issue(s);
  • Inspect the mechanical issue(s) and troubleshoot to determine cause of service requirement;
  • Plan work procedures using technical charts, manuals, and/or computer software, if required;
  • Follow checklists and flow charts to ensure all critical parts are examined;
  • Read and interpret diagnostic test results to identify mechanical problems;
  • Repair and/or replace malfunctioning components, parts and other mechanical or electrical equipment;
  • Rebuild engines and transmissions when the effective lifetimes are over;
  • Test drive vehicle to ensure the issue has been resolved and the vehicle operates smoothly;
  • Move equipment requiring repair into and out of the maintenance facility in a safe manner;
  • Conduct repair, maintenance and/or service requirements on various types of equipment in a timely and accurate manner;
  • Accurately complete work orders on any repair, maintenance and/or service tasks performed for each piece of equipment, including time spent on the repair as well as any inventory items (e.g. parts, materials, etc.) used to complete the repair;
  • Report important repair, maintenance, service and inventory issues to management;
  • Perform various equipment repair and/or service tasks/projects as determined periodically by management;
  • Maintain a clean working environment; and
  • Adhere to all company, local, state and federal safety rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work from time-to-time in inclement weather conditions including ice, snow, and cold repairing diesel engines, transmissions, brake systems, steering mechanism, etc.;
  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment when necessary;
  • Must have own tools to perform repair, maintenance and/or service tasks;
  • Must be familiar with various mechanic tools and their proper use;
  • In depth knowledge of repairing, maintaining and servicing diesel engines, transmissions, brake systems, steering system, etc.;
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills to find the root cause of mechanical issues and make appropriate repairs;
  • Must have transportation to get to and from work;
  • Knowledge of computers and diesel engine software a plus;
  • Ability to work in a team environment;
  • Ability to follow strict company safety rules;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and motivational skills; and
  • Excellent attention to detail.
