DIESEL MECHANIC

Job Summary

The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel-powered vehicles and equipment owned and operated by the municipality. This includes heavy-duty trucks, heavy-duty equipment, and emergency vehicles, and related machinery to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation in support of municipal services.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintain regular and prompt attendance, physically present to work.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on diesel engines, braking systems, steering systems, suspension, and hydraulic systems including repairs and knowledge of hose-making equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and electronic malfunctions using diagnostic tools and equipment.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment to identify safety issues and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance services according to established schedules
  • Repair or replace defective parts, components, and systems.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
  • Respond to emergency repair needs, including after-hours or on-call assignments as required.
  • Operate municipal vehicles and equipment for testing and evaluation purposes.
  • Communicate repair needs and timelines to supervisors and fleet personnel.
  • Obtain quotes, ordering parts, maintaining inventory, and tracking costs.
  • Assist with inspections required for DOT, emissions, or safety compliance.
  • Support maintenance of gasoline-powered equipment as needed.
  • Provide guidance or training to junior mechanics or apprentices.
  • May be required to work beyond normal business hours at night and/or on weekends.
  • Performs other similar or related duties as assigned by City Manager.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Completion of a recognized diesel mechanic training program or equivalent experience.
  • Three to five years of experience as a diesel mechanic (municipal or fleet experience preferred).
  • Applicants must pass pre-employment criminal background check and drug screen at City's expense.
  • Must have current valid Class "C" Texas Driver License and be insurable.
  • Must successfully complete Emergency Management and Incident Command Training.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of diesel engine systems and heavy equipment repair.
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems, repairs, and hose-making equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic data.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic software and electronic systems.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective communication and record-keeping skills.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Work performed in a municipal garage, repair facility, and/or outdoor job sites.
  • Exposure to noise, fumes, grease, and moving mechanical parts.
