Diesel Mechanic - Heavy Construction Equipment

Diesel Mechanic – Heavy Equipment & Trucks (Full-Time)

American Excavating Corp. – Derry, NH

Read This First

This is not a job where someone tells you what to do all day.

We’re looking for a self-motivated diesel mechanic who stays busy, takes initiative, and finds the next thing that needs to be done without being asked.

At the same time, there will be days when multiple things are going on—you may be given direction, but you need to be able to prioritize and make good decisions on what matters most.

Our goal is simple: we don’t want equipment sitting when it should be working.

If you need constant direction or prefer to wait for instructions, this is not the right fit.

About Us

American Excavating Corp. is a family-owned excavation contractor based in Derry, NH, serving Southern New Hampshire for over 30 years. We run a busy operation with a large fleet of excavators, loaders, trucks, and support equipment, and we take pride in keeping everything running safely and efficiently.

About the Role

We are hiring a Diesel Mechanic with a few years of experience to work primarily out of our shop, with some field work as needed.

You’ll be responsible for keeping our fleet running—handling routine maintenance, diagnosing issues, and making repairs.

A big part of this role is:

  • Staying ahead of problems, and
  • Knowing what to tackle first when multiple issues come up

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Perform routine service and maintenance on heavy equipment and trucks
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and basic electrical issues
  • Handle preventative maintenance to minimize downtime
  • Work on excavators, loaders, skid steers, and on-road trucks
  • Maintain service records and track upcoming maintenance needs
  • Use and maintain a fully equipped service truck and shop tools

And when things are caught up:

  • Clean and organize the shop
  • Organize parts, tools, and inventory
  • Look for anything that can be improved, fixed, or prepared ahead of time

What We Expect

  • You keep yourself busy—always looking for the next task
  • You can prioritize and triage issues when multiple things need attention
  • You understand that uptime is critical and respond accordingly
  • You take ownership of your work and don’t cut corners
  • You can work independently without being micromanaged
  • You show up every day, on time, ready to work
  • You take pride in a clean, organized shop and well-maintained equipment

If you’re the type to stand around when things slow down, this is not the job for you.

Experience & Skills

  • 2+ years of experience as a diesel or heavy equipment mechanic
  • Strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, and equipment systems
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose issues independently
  • Welding and fabrication experience is a plus
  • Valid driver’s license required (CDL is a plus, not required)

What You Get

  • Competitive hourly pay based on experience
  • Private workspace/office and top-of-the-line service truck
  • Steady, year-round work
  • Opportunity to grow with a well-established company
  • A team that values people who take initiative and get things done

Who This Job Is For

  • A mechanic who doesn’t need to be told what to do next
  • Someone who can think ahead and prioritize under pressure
  • Someone who takes pride in keeping equipment running and crews productive
