Position Summary
The Digital Content and Social Media Strategist serves as a key storyteller and visual communicator for Alma College. This position is a
full time, in-person
position and is responsible for leading the planning, creation, and distribution of engaging content across digital platforms—particularly social media, the college’s website, and YouTube. The strategist blends creativity with strategy to develop content that authentically reflects the college’s mission, enhances brand visibility, and supports key institutional priorities including student recruitment, alumni engagement, fundraising, and student success.
In addition to managing the college’s institutional social media channels and YouTube presence, this role coordinates campus photography and video production efforts and oversees student content creators and social media assistants. The strategist works closely with departments across campus to ensure that content speaks effectively to prospective student audiences. Flexibility is essential, as the role requires occasional evening and weekend coverage of campus events.
This position is a vital member of the integrated marketing and communications team and reports to the Director of Communication and Marketing.

Essential Functions
Social Media and YouTube Management

Develop and implement a comprehensive digital content strategy across platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, and YouTube, with tailored content for undergraduate and graduate audiences.

Serve as the institutional voice for Alma College’s official social media accounts by creating engaging content, fostering dialogue, and responding to inquiries in a timely and brand-consistent manner.

Oversee strategy and publishing schedule for the college’s media channels, ensuring brand-aligned video storytelling and audience engagement.

Monitor and analyze social media trends, track engagement metrics, and audience behavior to optimize content performance and inform future strategy.

Provide social media guidance and best practice training to campus departments and student organizations.
Photography and Visual Content Coordination

Coordinate and manage campus photography projects, including headshots, events, and campus life imagery, ensuring consistent visual standards.

Maintain the college’s digital media library and photography archive.

Collaborate with freelancers and contractors for high-level photo/video needs, as needed.
Content Creation and Scheduling

Produce original content (written, visual, and video) that supports institutional goals and reflects Alma’s brand, voice, and tone.

Build and maintain a strategic content calendar aligned with academic cycles, enrollment campaigns, events, and key college milestones.

Attend and cover major campus events to capture real-time content and provide post-event engagement materials.

Collaborate with marketing team members to integrate digital content into broader multimedia campaigns.
Student Assistant Management

Recruit, train, and supervise a team of student photographers, videographers, and social media assistants.

Assign, review, and provide constructive feedback on student work to ensure high-quality, brand-aligned content.

Provide mentorship and hands-on learning opportunities to support students’ professional development in digital media.
General Marketing Support

Assist with updates to the college website, internal communications platforms, calendars, and digital signage.

Support the development of digital ad campaigns for enrollment and engagement, including writing and coordinating content.
Required Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in communications, digital media, journalism, marketing, art/design, or a related field.

At least one year of professional experience in digital content creation, social media management, or multimedia storytelling.

Strong understanding of digital and social media platforms and their strategic use in brand-building and engagement.

Ability to shoot and edit both video and photography content.

Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills.

Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to cover live events.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience managing social media and/or YouTube content for an organization or institution.

Familiarity with higher education audiences, including undergraduate and graduate students.

Experience supervising student workers or content creators.

Knowledge of tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Hootsuite/Later, and video editing software (Premiere Pro, Final Cut, etc.).

Experience in content strategy, audience segmentation, or data-informed digital marketing

Photography experience

Experience working with underrepresented, first-generation, Pell-eligible, and diverse populations.
Physical Requirements

Ability to navigate campus and attend events in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings.

Ability to lift up to 20 pounds of equipment (e.g., camera gear).

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
