Direct Care Staff/Direct Support Staff (DCS/DSP)

Direct Care Staff provide supervision, support, and care to youth in accordance with Washington Administrative Code (WAC) requirements and agency policies. Staff ensure the health, safety, and rights of the youth they serve, while implementing individualized service plans and maintaining compliance with all state regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide continuous supervision and maintain a safe environment in compliance with WAC standards
  • Implement and follow Individual Service Plans (ISP), Behavior Support Plans (BSP), or treatment plans as required
  • Support individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs), including hygiene, meals, and personal care
  • Administer or assist with medications in accordance with WAC and agency policy (if certified/authorized)
  • Accurately document all services, incidents, and observations per WAC documentation requirements
  • Report incidents, safety concerns, and mandatory reporting requirements within required timelines
  • Maintain client confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and WAC regulations
  • Use approved de-escalation and behavior management techniques; prohibit use of unauthorized restraints
  • Support individuals in accessing community resources and participating in daily activities
  • Ensure client rights are upheld, including dignity, privacy, and freedom from abuse, neglect, or exploitation
  • Participate in required trainings and maintain all certifications per WAC requirements
  • Follow all agency policies, including emergency procedures, infection control, and safety protocols

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Must meet WAC minimum qualifications for direct care staff
  • Ability to pass Washington State background check (DSHS)
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record (if transporting clients)
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Food Handler’s Permit (if applicable)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of client rights and mandatory reporting laws in Washington State
  • Ability to follow written care plans and document services accurately
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and ethical conduct
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in crisis situations

Work Environment

  • Residential or community-based setting
  • May require evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight shifts
  • May include physical tasks such as lifting, standing, and assisting individuals
