The Director of Advanced Practice is responsible for enterprise-wide oversight of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), including Nurse Practitioners (NPs), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs), and Physician Assistants (PAs).
This leader provides strategic direction, operational oversight, and clinical leadership to ensure high-quality, safe, and cost-effective care across inpatient and outpatient settings. The Director partners with executive medical and nursing leadership to align APP practice with organizational mission, regulatory requirements, and system-wide priorities.
The role includes a 60% administrative / 40% clinical commitment, maintaining active clinical practice to support credibility, engagement, and continuous understanding of frontline care delivery.
Strategic Leadership & Program Development
- Direct the implementation of clinical policies, standards, and strategies to optimize APP practice across all care models.
- Establish and maintain a standardized APP leadership structure to ensure consistent oversight, accountability, and support across the organization.
- Partner with Nursing and Medical leadership to develop and evaluate organizational mission, vision, and strategic plans for inpatient and outpatient care delivery.
- Lead the development of a scalable advanced practice infrastructure aligned with enterprise growth and national best practices.
- Drive continuous improvement through structured program evaluation, outcomes tracking, and integration of evidence-based practices.
Clinical Quality, Safety, and Standardization
- Oversee development and implementation of evidence-based, standardized practice guidelines to ensure safe, efficient, and regulatory-compliant care.
- Ensure alignment with APP scope of practice laws, accreditation standards, and organizational policies.
- Monitor clinical quality, patient outcomes, and performance metrics to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary leaders to ensure consistency in care delivery across all settings.
APP Workforce Development, Education & Academic Partnerships
- Provide executive oversight of APP onboarding programs, ensuring a standardized, competency-based orientation model across the system.
- Lead the design and implementation of enterprise-wide APP education and training frameworks, ensuring consistency in clinical practice, professional development, and continuing education.
- Develop and support a standardized APP precepting model to ensure high-quality clinical training experiences for students and new graduates.
- Partner closely with the UT College of Medicine and affiliated academic institutions to:
- Expand and strengthen APP student clinical rotations
- Align educational curricula with health system practice needs
- Support academic-clinical integration and workforce pipeline development
- Establish system standards for preceptor training, evaluation, and recognition to ensure consistency and excellence in teaching.
- Promote a culture of lifelong learning, scholarship, and evidence-based practice among APPs.
- Recommend and guide resource allocation to support onboarding, precepting programs, clinical education, and leadership development.
Operational Excellence & System Integration
- Lead initiatives that enhance operational efficiency, including workflow optimization and care model redesign.
- Collaborate across service lines to ensure optimal utilization of APPs practicing at top-of-license.
- Support system-wide initiatives (informatics, telehealth, population health, etc.) that impact APP practice.
- Evaluate and implement innovative care delivery models to improve access, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
Collaboration & Governance
- Partner with the Medical Staff Office to oversee APP credentialing and privileging processes.
- Collaborate with executive leadership (CNO, CMO, service line leaders) to align APP strategy with enterprise priorities.
- Support development of APP shared governance structures.
- Represent advanced practice at organizational and, when appropriate, regional/national forums.
Clinical Practice (40%)
- Maintain active clinical practice in an inpatient and/or outpatient setting.
- Demonstrate expert clinical knowledge and serve as a role model for high-quality, patient-centered care.
- Use clinical engagement to inform leadership decisions and maintain connection to frontline challenges and opportunities.
Leadership Expectations
- Demonstrates expert leadership in advanced practice with the ability to influence at the executive level.
- Build strong interdisciplinary relationships across physicians, nursing, and administrative teams.

Licensure & Certification
- Physician Assistant credential from the NCCPA or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensure prior to hire date.
Education
- Master’s degree in nursing or graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
Experience (Preferred)
- Significant leadership experience in advanced practice.
- Demonstrated success leading large, complex, multi-site APP teams.
- Experience with strategic planning, program development, and performance improvement.
