Theory Wellness is the first employee-owned cannabis company in Massachusetts and the largest in the country. Announced on December 20th, 2023, this historic milestone honors the hard work and dedication of our team, preserving and rewarding those who have built our operations and upheld our values. This change in ownership reflects our commitment to empowering our employees and ensuring the future success of our company.
Summary
Theory Wellness is building a Business Intelligence & Automation department to fundamentally improve how a vertically integrated, multi-state cannabis operator makes decisions. This role leads that effort. The Director of Data Intelligence & Automation owns the company’s data infrastructure, reporting systems, AI deployment, and automation strategy, serving every function from cultivation and manufacturing to retail, wholesale, finance, compliance, and marketing.
This is not a passive reporting role. The right candidate will proactively identify where better data, smarter automation, and AI-powered tools can create measurable business value, then build and deploy those solutions with a small but experienced team. You will have direct access to executive leadership, a company-wide mandate, and the opportunity to build an AI-first data organization from the ground up at a profitable, growing company with operations in MA, ME, VT, NH, MN, OH, NJ, and NY.
Responsibilities
Data Infrastructure & Business Intelligence
- Reporting Architecture: Design, build, and maintain the company’s core reporting and analytics infrastructure. Ensure production, inventory, sales, supply chain, and financial data are accurate, accessible, and actionable across all markets.
- Dashboard & Visualization: Develop and manage dashboards and reporting tools that give leadership, production managers, retail operators, and department heads real-time visibility into performance metrics, inventory health, and operational bottlenecks.
- Data Integration: Connect disparate systems (seed-to-sale tracking, POS, compliance platforms, ERP, financial tools, HR systems) into a unified data environment. Resolve data fragmentation and build reliable pipelines.
- Data Quality & Governance: Establish and enforce data quality standards, validation processes, and governance policies. Identify and remediate data integrity issues proactively, not reactively.
- Data Health & Consistency: Own the cleanliness and consistency of data across all systems company-wide. Ensure product names, categories, locations, and transactional records are standardized and reconciled across platforms. Build monitoring processes to catch discrepancies before they degrade reporting trust or decision quality.
- Proactive Intelligence: Go beyond responding to data requests. Surface insights, trends, anomalies, and opportunities that leadership hasn’t asked about yet. Frame findings in business terms: revenue at risk, margin impact, throughput equivalence.
AI Strategy & Implementation
- AI Deployment: Lead the company’s AI implementation strategy, including large language model (LLM) deployment, conversational AI tools, and AI-powered workflow automation across all departments.
- Use Case Development: Identify, prioritize, and deliver AI use cases that create real operational value, from automated inventory alerts and natural-language data querying to AI-assisted compliance workflows and production planning tools.
- AI Governance: Build frameworks for responsible AI use, including data privacy, output validation, and appropriate use policies. Ensure AI tools are trustworthy, auditable, and aligned with regulatory requirements.
- Change Management: Drive AI adoption across the organization. Train teams, build trust in AI-powered tools, and ensure adoption translates into measurable productivity gains, not just novelty.
Automation & Systems Integration
- Workflow Automation: Identify and automate repetitive, manual processes across production, compliance, procurement, finance, and operations. Reduce human error and free up team capacity for higher-value work.
- Systems Connectivity: Architect and maintain integrations between business systems using APIs, MCP servers, webhooks, and automation platforms. Build the connective tissue between tools that currently operate in silos.
- Vendor & Platform Management: Evaluate, select, and manage technology vendors and platforms. Own the relationship between the company’s operational needs and its technology stack.
Cross-Functional Business Support
- Production & Supply Chain: Support production planning, inventory management, menu health tracking, days-on-hand analysis, extraction yield monitoring, and supply chain optimization through data and automation.
- Retail: Deliver analytics that drive menu optimization, assortment planning, velocity tracking, and demand forecasting across all retail locations.
- Wholesale Sales & Operations: Provide data tools and reporting that support wholesale channel performance, including order tracking, account analytics, inventory allocation visibility, and sales pipeline intelligence.
- Finance: Support financial reporting, margin analysis, budget tracking, and cost modeling. Ensure data systems feed accurate, timely information to the finance team.
- Compliance: Build tools and automations that reduce compliance burden, improve traceability, and ensure regulatory reporting accuracy across all states of operation.
- Cultivation: Provide data support for yield tracking, strain performance analysis, and cultivation-to-production supply alignment.
- Marketing: Support brand performance analytics, campaign measurement, customer insights, and market trend analysis. Provide marketing leadership with data-driven frameworks to evaluate product positioning, promotional effectiveness, and competitive dynamics across markets.
- HR: Support labor analytics, workforce planning, and training systems as needed.
Team Leadership
- Team Management: Lead a small, experienced team of data and automation professionals. Set priorities, manage workload, develop skills, and build a culture of ownership, precision, and business impact.
- Department Growth: Build the Business Intelligence & Automation department from its founding stage into a mature, scalable function. Define roles, hire strategically, and develop the team’s capabilities in line with company growth.
- Cross-Department Collaboration: Serve as the primary liaison between the data/AI function and every other department. Translate business problems into data solutions and data findings into business action.
