Job Title: Director of Capitol Artificial Intelligence Learning and Innovation Environment (CAILIE)

Reports To: Vice President for Academic Affairs

The vision of the Capitol Artificial Intelligence Learning and Innovation Environment (CAILIE) is to provide the resources for Capitol Technology University to engage in meaningful high-impact, student-centered activities in the emerging field of Artificial Intelligence. CAILIE aims to ensure that students acquire practical and marketable AI knowledge and experience, with the ultimate goal of producing "AI-Ready” students. Components of CAILIE include; a remotely accessible AI Environment and Lab that will enhance Capitol Tech's capabilities and educational offerings in Artificial Intelligence.

Position Summary:

The Director of CAILIE is responsible for the overall operations, management, and strategic growth of CAILIE. This role combines technical expertise, project management, and stakeholder engagement to ensure that the lab supports cutting-edge AI research and education. The Director will foster an innovative and collaborative environment while maintaining operational efficiency in alignment with university goals. Accordingly, Capitol strongly encourages industry professionals with an appropriate degree and experience to apply for this position. This is a full-time on-campus position on our beautiful 52-acre campus in Laurel, MD, on the Baltimore Washington parkway.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement processes by which AI focused research projects will be proposed, selected and awarded to admitted or enrolled students, faculty members, or AICE Advisory Board members.
  • Develop and implement workshops and resources which support students in successfully navigating the process of proposing research projects.
  • Oversee and coordinate multiple AI-focused research and educational projects, ensuring on-time delivery, alignment with objectives, and appropriate management of funds.
  • Develop and implement workshops and resources which support project PI’s in managing their awards and research projects.
  • Prepare bi-annual status and project reports on funded projects for review by the University Executive Committee.
  • Act as the central point of communication between students, faculty, and external collaborators to streamline workflows and foster innovation.
  • Oversee the regular assessment the lab’s performance, infrastructure, and resource needs to ensure its continued relevance and impact.
  • Oversee the optimization of the allocation and utilization of lab resources, including hardware, software, and space, to support diverse projects.
  • Oversee the maintenance and upgrade of lab infrastructure to meet evolving technical demands.
  • Directly supervise technical administrators of CAILIE
  • Manage the University’s GitHub account
  • Conduct budget analyses, monitor expenses, and collaborate with VPAA to manage fund distribution.
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies and maintain accountability for all expenditures.
  • Develop and propose and annual budget for approval by the VPAA
  • Build relationships with students, faculty, and industry partners, ensuring their needs and feedback are incorporated into lab operations.
  • Represent the lab in external forums, promoting its capabilities and securing partnerships or sponsorships.
  • Organize workshops, training sessions, and seminars to enhance lab users’ skills and knowledge in AI technologies.
  • Organize workshops and manage projects which result in the integration of real-world AI topics or solutions across all curriculums
  • Encourage a culture of continuous learning and professional development related to Artificial Intelligence across the university
  • Engage with industry leaders to keep the lab aligned with the latest AI technologies and trends.
  • Pursue opportunities for industry collaboration, sponsorship, and partnership to expand lab capabilities.
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred.
  • 7+ years of combined experience in the following fields: computer engineering, computer science, and/or IT project management.
  • Strong technical background in AI technologies, frameworks, and tools.
  • Proven project management experience with a record of managing complex projects successfully.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Familiarity with budgeting and financial processes in academic or research settings.
  • A proactive, service-oriented mindset with a passion for fostering innovation in education.

Salary Range

Based on current market conditions and the scale of similar roles:

  • Estimated Range: $100,000 – $130,000 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, and local market conditions.
