Director of Casualty Auto and Litigation

Position Summary

The Director of Casualty Auto and Litigation Claims is responsible for leading all Auto and General Liability claims within the Claims Department, including litigation. The Director of Casualty Auto and Litigation Claims will oversee and manage the Casualty Supervisor, who is responsible for the team for auto physical damage claims, as well as a team of Claims Bodily Injury and Liability Adjusters of the Casualty Injury & Complex Claims Unit (ICCU).

Primary Responsibilities

  • Exceed customer service expectations on claims handling with our policyholders and our agents.
  • Develop great working relationships with Wayne’s Independent Agents on claims issues.
  • Oversee the Casualty Supervisor on the management of the Casualty Auto Team, which handles auto physical damage on Auto claims as well as liability investigations and 1st party Medical Payment claims.
  • Lead the Casualty Injury & Complex Claims Unit (ICCU) in the handling of liability claims on Auto and General Liability type claims.
  • Continually update and improve claim processes within the teams.
  • Continually update and improve the strategy to control litigated and non-litigation expenses.
  • Manage and maintain an external defense counsel panel as well as develop strong relations with defense counsel.
  • Convey complex information (coverage, decisions, outcomes, etc.) to all appropriate parties, including management while maintaining a professional demeanor in all situations.
  • Continually develop and improve training for claim handlers to improve claims knowledge and skill as well as claim confidence.
  • Optimize subrogation and salvage recoveries on claim files.
  • Collaborate with attorneys and adjusters on valuing difficult claims.
  • Collaborate with other departments on claim issues.
  • Stay current on insurance topics, technologies, and trends.
  • Provide timely management reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Highly customer service focused
  • Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent insurance-related experience
  • Seven or more years of prior management experience
  • Ten or more years of auto and/or liability claims handling experience
  • Five or more years of litigation handling
  • Construction defect claims litigation knowledge a plus
  • Extensive attorney-represented and non-attorney represented injury claims handling experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Strong PC skills including Microsoft Office
  • High level of organizational, reasoning and listening skills
  • Ability to manage time effectively and work independently with little supervision
  • Multi-task and detail oriented
  • Ability to work individually and in a team environment
  • Ability to create positive and collaborative working relationships
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Willing and able to travel, work after normal business hours and adjust schedule as may be required by circumstances
  • Reliable

Working conditions

This position may be performed at the company headquarters in a traditional office environment full-time, at employee’s remote office full-time, or a hybrid schedule of part-time at the company headquarters and part-time at employee’s remote office. This position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, and filing cabinets.
