Director of Construction Accounting / Senior Construction Accountant

About the Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced accounting professional to lead and strengthen the accounting operations of a growing multifamily construction and real estate development organization. This role is ideal for either a highly experienced Senior Construction Accountant ready to step into a leadership position or an established Director of Construction Accounting seeking a strategic role with significant visibility and impact.
The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in construction accounting, job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, and Sage-based accounting systems. Multifamily construction experience is strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting functions related to construction and development projects
- Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes
- Prepare and review WIP schedules and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Monitor project budgets, forecasts, and cost-to-complete reporting
- Ensure accuracy of job cost allocations and project profitability analysis
- Lead preparation of financial statements and supporting schedules
- Manage cash flow forecasting and construction draw processes
- Coordinate external audits, tax reporting, and lender requirements
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff
- Partner with project managers, operations teams, and executive leadership
- Develop and improve accounting controls, procedures, and reporting systems
- Support acquisition, development, and construction financing activities
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 8+ years of accounting experience
- 5+ years of construction accounting experience
- Advanced proficiency with Sage Construction software (Sage 300 CRE / Timberline preferred)
- Strong knowledge of:
- Job Cost Accounting
- Work-in-Progress (WIP) Reporting
- Percentage-of-Completion Accounting
- Construction Draws
- General Ledger Management
- Financial Statement Preparation
- Experience managing multiple concurrent projects
- Strong Excel and financial reporting skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with multifamily, mixed-use, or large-scale residential construction projects
- CPA designation
- Experience overseeing accounting teams
- Background working for a General Contractor, Construction Manager, or Multifamily Developer
- Familiarity with lien releases, retention, subcontractor compliance, and AIA billing
- Experience with multi-entity accounting structures

This individual should be capable of managing detailed project-level accounting while contributing to executive-level financial decision-making.

Compensation
We are open to candidates ranging from highly experienced Senior Construction Accountants to Director-level accounting leaders.
Salary Range: $100,000 – $250,000+
