Director of Design & Construction

The Director of Design & Construction is responsible for overseeing hotel renovation and new construction projects across the portfolio, ensuring projects are executed in alignment with brand standards, budgets, operational goals, and project timelines. This role provides leadership and direction to Project Managers while supporting strategic initiatives established by executive leadership.

The Director serves as a critical link between President of Design and Construction, VP of Design and Construction, operations, architects, designers, consultants, contractors, and procurement teams to ensure successful project delivery from planning through completion.

Key Responsibilities

Project Oversight & Execution

  • Oversee multiple hotel renovations, conversions, and new construction projects across the portfolio
  • Manage Project Managers and support teams to ensure consistent execution and accountability
  • Monitor project schedules, budgets, approvals, and construction progress
  • Identify project risks and proactively implement solutions to maintain timelines and budgets
  • Ensure compliance with brand standards, ADA requirements, life safety codes, and operational requirements
  • Coordinate with Operations teams to manage out-of-order rooms, renovation sequencing, and immediate repair projects across the portfolio to minimize operational disruption and maintain hotel performance.

Design & Brand Coordination

  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, and brand representatives throughout all project phases
  • Work closely with the VP of Design & Construction and Interior Design teams in coordinating design reviews, construction documentation, finish selections, FF&E specifications, and project submittals.

Construction Management

  • Oversee contractor coordination, bid reviews, budgeting, value engineering, and project execution
  • Conduct site visits and project reviews to ensure quality control and construction progress
  • Review pay applications, change orders, and project reporting documentation
  • Support resolution of field conditions, construction conflicts, and schedule impacts

Financial & Operational Management

  • Assist VP of Design & Construction in preparation and tracking of Cap Ex budgets and project forecasting.
  • Assist in project scheduling.
  • Work closely with Project Managers to ensure projects align with timelines and budgets.
  • Review project spend reports and support budget reconciliation efforts in coordination with the Project and Administrative Coordinator and VP of Design & Construction.
  • Coordinate with the Project and Administrative Coordinator and VP of Design & Construction on draw request organization, tracking, and project financial documentation.
  • Collaborate with operations teams to minimize disruption to hotel performance during renovations.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to Project Managers and project support team members i.e. Project and Administrative Coordinator
  • Establish project accountability standards and reporting procedures
  • Support departmental process improvements and operational efficiencies
  • Foster strong relationships with ownership groups, vendors, consultants, and brand partners

Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, Interior Design, Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • 10-12+ years of hotel construction experience
  • Experience managing hotel renovations, conversions, and/or new construction projects
  • Strong understanding of hospitality brand standards and operational requirements
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in fast-paced environments
  • Strong budgeting, scheduling, communication, and leadership skills
  • Proficiency in project management software (smartsheets), construction documentation, and Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Experience

  • Hospitality-focused development and construction experience
  • Experience with economy, midscale, extended stay, or select service hotel brands
  • Multi-property portfolio management experience
  • Experience coordinating FF&E procurement and installation
  • Familiarity with franchise brand approval processes and PIP execution

Pay: $140,000.00 per year
