ORGANIZATION: Bread of Life Mission is a non-denominational, Christian, social services organization, which provides critically needed goods and services to the homeless, poor, and needy of Washington State without regard to race, color, sexual orientation, creed, national origin, or religion.
SUMMARY OF POSITION: Bread of Life Mission’s Director of Development (DD) is a member of the executive team and responsible for the overall fundraising, planning, and execution in the support of the mission, vision and goals of Bread of Life Mission (BOLM). Working closely with the CEO, the Director of Development oversees the development strategy and execution needed to meet BOLM’s short-term and long-term goals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Management
- Oversee strategies and execution of planned giving, grants, mid and major donor programs, direct mail, foundations, social media, events, volunteers, and design and implement monthly giving program.
- Manage a growing team of 3 development professionals; coordinates weekly activity objectives, team meetings on a weekly basis, and the monthly development results review and planning meeting. Responsible for all aspects of departmental staffing, including hiring, evaluating, discipline, and dismissal.
- Responsible for departmental budget of $1.5M for development function, fiscal management and working with contracted vendors.
- Create a comprehensive fundraising plan and provide best practice fundraising knowledge to address organization challenges.
- Oversee and grow the grant program.
- Ensure that the organization’s large and small annual fundraising events meet revenue targets and strategic goals.
- Evaluate the effectiveness and results of fundraising initiatives. Present progress to the CEO and board committees.
- Embrace the use of data to share the story of the impact of BOLM to prospective donors and supporters, inviting them (asking them) to participate at increasing levels.
- Create and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance BOLM’s brand identity, broaden awareness of its programs and priorities, and generate donor support.
Leads By Personal Example
- Position the mission in the community as a reliable source and disseminator of information regarding meeting the needs of the homeless.
- In addition to managing all aspects of the development program for the organization, personally manage a portfolio of 50-75 major donor relationships. Expected to conduct 2 meetings a week/100 a year with donors to BOLM.
- Oversee a Local Church Outreach Program to develop and nurture church relationships with BOLM.
- Oversee and approve preparation and distribution of press releases, media advisories, and public service announcements in collaboration with the CEO.
- Direct the coordination of fundraising activities and creates opportunities for staff involvement.
- Embrace the ideal of transparent and frequent interaction with his/her peers on the executive team in a collaborative effort to advance BOLM.
- At any time, with or without notice, will perform other duties and activities as assigned.
Senior Management Team Coordination
- Partner with the Chief Executive Officer to establish annual goals and meet fundraising goals. Ensure that department is aligned with BOLM strategic plan.
- Develop strategy and execute upon mid-level and major donor relations and acquisition of mid-level and major gifts.
- Lead the team supporting the $30M Capital campaign to support the achievement of long-term strategic goals of BOLM.
- Works collaboratively with the CEO to increase private and foundation funding.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:
- Successful track record of cultivating, soliciting and securing the gift with major gift prospects.
- Embrace the ideal of transparent and frequent interaction with his/her peers on the executive team in a collaborative effort to advance BOLM.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Professional, especially Excel; and donor database software, desktop publication, social media, and internet.
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication skills with a professional demeanor.
- The ability to think strategically and lead effectively, while serving others
- Comfortable speaking to large groups, interacting one-on-one with people from all walks of life and can think quickly on his/her feet.
- Able to balance the demands of an executive leadership role, while building trust and working with others to accomplish the Mission of BOLM.
- Highly ethical, trustworthy, and professional.
- Organized with good analytical and decision-making abilities.
- Must be a self-starter who regularly sets and achieves activity and results-driven goals.
- Knowledgeable and empathetic to the needs of the poor.
- Agree with and carry out responsibilities in accordance with the Mission’s policies that are included in Bread of Life Mission Directives, Code of Conduct, Statement of Faith, and Mission Statement. Willingly sign a confidentiality agreement.
- Valid WA state driver’s license and insurance, with the means and ability to travel in Seattle and the surrounding area to meet with donors.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or CFRE preferred.
- Demonstrated proven fundraising track record of results.
- Seven (7) + years’ experience with growing responsibilities in fundraising, marketing, or a related field
- Five (5) + years responsibility in a leadership role
- Comprehensive knowledge of fundraising, its impact, and awareness of associated tax- ramifications/deductions.
- Effective in researching and analyzing data to identify prospects.
- Demonstrated knowledge of planned giving techniques and vehicles.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL FACTORS:
- Work is performed in a typical interior office within an emergency shelter/transitional housing environment with occasional outside work required.
- Must be able to drive to meet with donors and supporters in the community and have their own dependable transportation
- Must be able to lift 15-30 lbs. Work requires talking, standing, walking, sitting, pulling, pushing, reaching, crouching, carrying and other fine motor skills.
