The Opportunity
The AI Products team builds software products that transform AI models and biological data into scalable applications that accelerate scientific discovery. Working closely with AI model developers, researchers, and biologists, we connect the dots between research and scientific impact.
As Director of Engineering for the AI Products group, you will lead a world-class team of passionate engineers building transformative tools at the intersection of AI and biology. Your work will power the next generation of products that accelerate the analysis and interpretation of complex biological data using cutting-edge foundation models.
You’ll tackle ambitious technical challenges — from scaling model inference to production-grade performance, to designing intuitive systems for exploring multi-dimensional, high-resolution cellular imagery and video. You’ll also help architect platforms capable of processing and visualizing protein datasets at unprecedented scale, spanning more than a billion proteins.

What You'll Do

Lead an engineering team focused on building reliable, scalable, extensible software products.

Work cross-functionally with internal and external partners to develop and deliver on the roadmap, and to shape the long-term strategy for how AI Products drive our scientific impact ambitions.

Participate in and encourage Agile software development practices to deliver frequent value to our users and enable continuous feedback loops.

Set the technical direction, guide the team’s technical decisions, and ensure that best practices are consistently followed.

Ensure high quality in the work we deliver and serve as a hands-on manager to the team.

Provide mentorship and career development support to direct reports.

Hire and onboard engineers to fill resource gaps while building out a diverse team.
What You'll Bring

10+ years of experience in Software Engineering, including 5+ years of engineering leadership as a people manager.

Proven track record of architecting, delivering, and operating petabyte-scale data platforms across hybrid on-premises and cloud environments, enabling model training on rapidly evolving data modalities.

Deep technical expertise with the ability to translate complex theory into practical, scalable solutions—driving research, rigorous analysis, clear conclusions, and decisive execution.

Extensive experience hiring, managing, and developing high-performing engineering teams while cultivating a culture of excellence, ownership, and impact.

Strong cross-functional collaborator, partnering with interdisciplinary stakeholders to define product strategy, shape requirements, and deliver robust software solutions.

Compensation
The Redwood City, CA base pay range for a new hire in this role is $270,000.00 - $371,800. New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. Actual placement in range is based on job-related skills and experience, as evaluated throughout the interview process.

As we grow, we’re excited to strengthen in-person connections and cultivate a collaborative, team-oriented environment. This role is a hybrid position requiring you to be onsite for at least 60% of the working month, approximately 3 days a week, with specific in-office days determined by the team’s manager. The exact schedule will be at the hiring manager's discretion and communicated during the interview process.
