Definition and Distinguishing Characteristics
DEFINITION
Under general direction, to have responsibility for the administration and supervision of the Environmental Health Division in the County Land Use Agency; to assign, coordinate, and schedule environmental health investigations and inspections; to be responsible for the enforcement of Environmental Health laws, rules, and regulations; to perform a variety of the more difficult, complex, and specialized Environmental Health investigation and enforcement assignments; to represent the County Environmental Health Division with groups and organizations; to perform technical reviews of Environmental Health permit applications; to explain ordinances, resolutions, regulations and County policies to the public; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a single-position class for the position which oversees and directs the functions and activities of the Environmental Health Division in the County Land Use Agency. Responsibilities include directing, coordinating, and supervising the work of Division staff, preparing and administering the budget, and performing a broad range of complex professional Environmental Health work.

CLASSIFICATIONS SUPERVISED
Environmental Health Specialist I, II and III; Environmental Health Technician I and II; Administrative Secretary; Fiscal & Technical Services Assistant I, II and III; and Office Assistant I, II and III.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; crawl through various areas on hands and knees; stand, walk, or crouch on narrow and slippery surfaces; climb ladders, stairs, and scaffolding; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; lift and move object weighing up to 75 pounds; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computers, telephones, calculators, copiers, and FAX.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is usually performed in an office environment; some work is performed in varying temperature and humidity; exposure to high levels of noise; some exposure to dust; continuous contact with staff and the public.
Training and Experience
Any combination of training which would likely provide the required knowledge and experience is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Education
Graduation from a four (4) year college or university with a major in biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, or a closely related field.
Experience
Five (5) years of responsible experience in Environmental Health investigation, inspection, and enforcement work, preferably including at least one (1) year in a lead or supervisory capacity.
