Director of Experience Strategy

Who We Are

Wide Eye is an award-winning brand and digital design agency dedicated to propelling purpose-driven organizations forward. We partner with visionary leaders, nonprofits, campaigns, and socially conscious companies to deliver branding, design, and digital experiences that drive real impact. Our team thrives on creativity, collaboration, and pushing the boundaries of what design can do for good.

Why You’ll Love Working With Us

We’re fortunate to do work that matters — collaborating every day with organizations and leaders driving culture, policy, and social change. Our team holds itself to high standards of creativity, collaboration, and excellence, knowing our clients count on us to deliver impact. This isn’t just a job — it’s a chance to use your skills for good, alongside people who care deeply about making a difference.

The Role

As Director of Experience Strategy, you'll lead Wide Eye's experience strategy practice—the discipline that defines how our clients' websites, digital products, and platforms think, speak, behave, and perform. You own the strategic foundation that shapes every digital experience we create: how users navigate, what content they encounter, how they move toward action, and how we measure what's working.

You'll sit on the Wide Eye Leadership Team alongside our other practice leads. Your team includes in-house UX and content strategists, as well as a network of freelancers specializing in digital strategy, analytics, and user research and testing. You'll set the standards, build the processes, and also do hands-on work that ensures every project we deliver is grounded in evidence, structured with clarity, and optimized for real-world impact.

This is a strategy-first leadership role: rigorous, client-facing, and connected to measurable outcomes.

What You’ll Be Doing

Strategy Practice Leadership

Own and evolve Wide Eye's approach to experience strategy across all digital engagements.

  • Define and document our experience strategy methodology—spanning research, UX and content strategy, information architecture, and journey mapping
  • Lead strategy on complex, high-stakes client engagements from discovery through handoff to design and engineering
  • Ensure strategic deliverables—site maps, user journeys, content frameworks, IA, prototypes—are consistently excellent and mission-aligned
  • Oversee user research, usability testing, journey mapping, and stakeholder workshops—and ensure these inform the work throughout, not just at the start
  • Set standards for how we approach CRM and engagement tool integration, conversion optimization, and fundraising user flows
  • Own our point of view on human-centric, inclusive experiences and ensure it's embedded in how we approach every project
Team & Vendor Management

Build and steward the team that delivers strategic excellence at scale.

  • Manage, mentor, and develop in-house UX strategists and content strategists
  • Recruit, direct, and evaluate freelance strategists, analytics specialists, and user researchers
  • Create clear processes for how strategy work is scoped, staffed, and executed across project types
  • Partner with the Directors of Design, Brand Strategy, and Engineering to ensure strategic thinking translates cleanly into brand identity, visual and UI design, and technical execution
UX, Analytics & Digital Experience Innovation

Push the boundaries of what our digital experiences can do—and prove it with evidence.

  • Lead our thinking on emerging interaction patterns and digital experience trends, including how AI is reshaping how people discover and interact with web content
  • Experiment with emerging technologies and lead recommendations to clients on tools such as Algolia, AI-driven personalization engines, and other platforms that improve findability, streamline user journeys, and strengthen mission impact
  • Drive innovation in how we approach digital experiences specifically for mission-driven organizations: from friction-free service access to high-conversion fundraising flows to content ecosystems that actually get used
  • Own our analytics practice: define what we track, how we report it, and how insights shape both ongoing optimization and future project strategy—and build our capacity to demonstrate outcomes beyond launch so clients see the long-term value of our work
Business Development & Thought Leadership

Bring experience strategy expertise into how we win and grow client relationships.

  • Shape proposals and scopes for experience strategy engagements
  • Contribute to pitches and presentations with prospective clients
  • Educate clients on best practices for digital experience, content strategy, accessibility, AI, personalization, and analytics-driven optimization
  • Represent Wide Eye's experience strategy perspective externally through writing, speaking, and industry engagement

What Success Looks Like

A Strategy Practice That Scales: Every project—regardless of size or timeline—is grounded in clear strategic thinking before design begins.

Evidence-Driven Decisions: Clients and internal teams are making better decisions because of our research, data, and analysis—rather than just instinct.

Outcomes Beyond Launch: We can demonstrate measurable impact for clients after a project ships—traffic, engagement, conversion, retention—and use that data to deepen relationships.

A Cohesive Strategy Team: In-house strategists and freelance partners operate as a unified, high-functioning practice, not a loose collection of contractors.

Clear Direction: The rest of the Wide Eye team knows what experience strategy requires of them—and why it matters.

In Your First Year

  • Document our core experience strategy methodology so it can be applied consistently across the team, independent of any single person
  • Build or strengthen relationships with our freelance analytics, research, and UX network—so we're staffing strategy work with the right people, reliably
  • Take active ownership of strategy on at least two or three complex client engagements, establishing what great looks like
  • Establish how we measure and report on client outcomes post-launch, turning that into a repeatable practice

What You Bring

Experience / Qualifications

Required
  • 10 years in UX strategy, content strategy, or digital strategy, with at least 2+ years in a leadership or practice-lead role
  • Proven ability directing discovery, research, and data-informed strategy—not just executing, but leading teams and clients through complex processes
  • Deep expertise in information architecture, user journey mapping, content frameworks, and digital experience planning
  • Strong understanding of CRM technologies, conversion optimization, analytics platforms, and user testing methodologies
  • Solid grounding in modern CMSs, accessibility standards, and responsive/mobile experience principles
  • Genuine curiosity about and working familiarity with emerging web technologies, including AI-powered tools and platforms that are changing how users find, navigate, and engage with digital content, and how we and our clients can leverage them
  • Track record delivering complex digital platforms for clients
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication; confident presenting to executives and cross-functional teams
  • Demonstrated success managing and developing strategists or researchers
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment with multiple concurrent projects
Preferred
  • Experience with or genuine interest in progressive causes, nonprofits, campaigns, or advocacy organizations
  • Familiarity with fundraising platforms, CRM ecosystems (e.g., EveryAction, Salesforce), and digital organizing tools
  • Experience building or formalizing a strategy practice within an agency or in-house team

Qualities We're Looking For

  • A rigorous thinker who can translate research and data into clear strategic direction—and communicate it with conviction
  • Collaborative by default—comfortable holding a strong point of view while genuinely bringing others along
  • A builder's mindset—energized by creating structure and standards in a growing organization, not inheriting a finished playbook. Moves past diagnosing issues to actively solving them, even when the path forward isn't fully defined
  • Comfort navigating the tension between strategic ambition and project realities
  • High emotional intelligence—leads with empathy and builds an environment where people do their best work
  • Commitment to building inclusive and innovative digital experiences and to creating positive social change through strategic work
  • Deeply curious and unafraid to experiment, whether that means testing a new tool, proposing an unconventional approach, or challenging how something has always been done

What We're Not Looking For

  • Practitioners who want to execute strategy without building the practice around it
  • Anyone who treats analytics as a post-launch afterthought rather than a core part of the work
  • Leaders who are most comfortable in a single discipline and uncomfortable bridging UX, content, and data
  • Anyone comfortable with "good enough" when missions are at stake

What We Offer

Salary range: $130k-$160k

Benefits: Unlimited PTO, 100% employer-paid health insurance, 401k/Safe Harbor contributions, paid parental leave, annual professional development budget, and more
