The Westchester Children’s Museum is seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to lead critical marketing and communication efforts for a children’s museum in an exciting growth phase. The Director of Marketing and Communications will work closely with the Executive Director, the Museum staff and Board of Trustees to develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications program that will build on and expand the Museum’s growth and visibility This position will be responsible for all of WCM’s internal and external communications, which will require managing media relations, expanding the Museum’s social media presence, establishing priorities for advertising and media sponsorships. producing the monthly newsletter, and developing website content.

Essential Responsibilities:

Media Relations

  • Draft press releases for feature, newsworthy programs and events.
  • Maintain a media list of writers, bloggers, print editors, online editors, broadcast producers and anchors.
  • Establish relationships with “mommy bloggers”, local feature writers and broadcasters.
  • Arrange site tours for local media
  • Upload programs and events to media calendars
  • Respond to media inquiries, requests for interviews, program descriptions and photos.

Newsletter

  • Draft monthly/quarterly newsletter, determining priorities to promote and gathering all information.
  • Write, format, distribute for review, schedule for distribution.

Website

  • Manage architectural changes to the site, working with staff ensure it is up to date, fresh and reflects that voice of WCM.
  • Upload programs to the calendar, determining highlighting on landing page.
  • Manage and implement all content changes to the site, including events, programs, donor links, employment opportunities, exhibit descriptions, and field trip and birthday party information.

Social Media and Online Presence

  • Maintain WCM’s ongoing presence on Instagram, Facebook, and Tik Tok.
  • Post at least 3x week, with a feature 2x week
  • Ensure the “voice” of posts is in keeping with institutional messaging, and that photos and graphics are in keeping with WCM’s visual identity.
  • Manage online listings: Google, Yelp etc.
  • Respond to comments and reviews.

Advertising and Media Sponsorships

  • Develop advertising Plan and Priorities, identifying long-term, high impact placements.
  • Cultivate media partnerships and sponsorships.

Marketing/Public Information

  • Draft/edit brochures, flyers and work with the Director of Development as needed to develop effective case statements and pitch letters.
  • Ensure the messaging reflects the Museum’s mission, values and goals.
  • Develop/oversee development of graphics for marketing materials

Signage and Visual Identity

  • Ensure that first impressions at the Museum entry set the tone for an exceptional first visit.
  • Provide Input into plans for internal wayfinding signage, and proposed signage plan with Westchester County/Playland.
  • Ensure that Museum staff is adhering to visual identity standards laid out in the Brand Book when creating public facing materials.

Candidate Profile and Qualifications

The Director of Marketing and Communications for the Westchester Children’s Museum will be a seasoned professional with a proven track record of marketing success in non-profit organizations. This individual will thoughtfully oversee the growth of the marketing and communications program at WCM, maintaining the connection to the Museum’s mission and core values. The successful candidate will have the following attributes and competencies:

  • Passion for WCM and its mission.
  • Results-driven approach: Capacity to oversee and execute a variety of marketing and communications streams, resulting in increased visitation and membership, as well as increased utilization of the Museum’s birthday party and museum rental programs and special events.
  • Relationship Builder: Ability to establish and cultivate beneficial relationships with media, marketing and advertising sources.

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of the following professional and personal qualities, skills and characteristics:

  • Five to ten years of solid marketing experience in the non-profit sector.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication and relationship building ability.
  • Facility with utilizing CANVA for graphics
  • Ability to represent the Museum in a variety of settings and contexts.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Personal transportation to attend networking and community events.

Compensation and Benefits:

Compensation for this position will be in the range of $85,000 - $95,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits include medical, paid time off, and all NYS paid sick leave and paid family leave in accordance with state law.
